Hello,

I bought a precision bass 15 years ago from someone that said it was from the 70's (77-78).
Lately I wanted to sell it so I took it apart and found a strange round shape hole just above the pickups.
It looks strange to me and I am afraid that this might not be a real Fender body.
Can anyone here, with knowledge about vintage basses, tell me if this is real or not?

Thanks,
Eldi

That hole, about the size of a 5 cent US coin is part of the CNC process. It is a retaining hole to keep the body blank stationary. I can't see enough of the bass to tell you yea or nay on whether this is Genuine Fender, but that neck pocket looks really sloppy. Also the WHITE pickup covers didn't come along until the P-Bass Special in 1980. So if that is a 76/77 it is not original.

Thanks.
So the hole is something that may reflect those years (77-78)?
Is there any part of the body that you would like to see in order to help you see if this is a real Fender body?

I am trying to restore it to its original state, so you say that white pickup were never on a 77-78 P-bass?

If you really want an exhaustive, definitive answer, go here.

They know their stuff there.

Yes, that's an indexing hole. From what year, I dunno.
