Good evening all!

I am selling one of my Precision's on Craigslist and had an email from a gentleman asking for the full serial number...

I have not given it to him, but my question is...what purpose or use would he have for just the serial number?

He asked no other questions, and although I think my add is very descriptive and includes pics of the bass for sale, I just found it odd...

Maybe I am just being paranoid, but I thought I would ask

Oh, the bass is a Road Worn Precision I bought new earlier this year

Thanks!

People like to check the serial number for year and background info. Unless you stole it from him, I wouldn't sweat it. You did register it with Fender, didn't you? I register all of my equipment with the manufacturers and copy all of the serial numbers, just in case. It's a road worn Precision. He could be checking to make sure that's what it is and not 10, 15 years old and beat up.

Thank you for the response!

I got him the info he was looking for without giving him the serial number...he was just wanting to know if it was a USA or Mexican made

Oh, and yes, the bass is registered to me with Fender

Thanks again!

My "straight" job for the past 17 years involves law enforcement data entry and retrieval.

Usually it is a good idea not to give out the full serial number for anything, but when selling an instrument it is often beneficial to post a partial serial number using "x" for the last three or four digits. "E238xxxx" for example would tell me instantly that this is an 82/83 Made in USA instrument.

The danger is that with the full serial someone could file a false police report and have your serial entered into the national police NCIC Hotfiles as a stolen item. Then when the police run the serial number your item would appear to be stolen and belong to the party who reported it stolen. Another possible use of the genuine serial number would be to create a forgery.

Recording your serial numbers of all your gear is VITAL to recovering your gear should it ever be stolen, damaged or destroyed. I have prepared a page with tips on the way I do this here: http://brotherdave.com/add_protectyourgear.htm
