Brotherdave asked me to post some pics of my new baby.
looks to be all original with case but missing the ashtrays. she seems to have been sitting in a closet for about 20 years... there is a lot of tarnish on all of the metal including the frets. slight cigarette smoke smell. pot codes are 304 6143.
I just got the guitar and have not played her yet. neck seems straight.
I started taking her apart to verify originality and want to clean the tarnish before reassembly.
I honestly felt as though I was the first person to turn a screw on the guitar. I doubt that to be true because 2 of the pick guard screws are slightly stripped.
But it felt like opening a crypt. certainly hadn't been done in a long time.

Dealing with tarnish or oxidation on a vintage bass is a delicate issue.
I personally loath any rust on an instrument that I play. I also hate dirt on my fingerboard and I hate tarnished tuning machines but some of this tarnish is the patina of a vintage instrument, so be conservative in your approach.

Fist I think you have a beautiful 1961 Precision bass. I would not do anything to compromise the value of or the vintage look of the instrument.

I recommend some 0000 steel wool to be used on all rusty parts, like the bridge saddles, because rust is progressive and it will get worse if left alone.
I would take off the strings and steel wool the fingerboard and then treat it with lemon oil. I would also use steel wool to clean up all of the pickguard screws and the neck plate. I don't like rust on any instrument. Rust is one element that I can't see doing to a bass intentionally.

I like to use brass polish to clean the tuning machines. They will never look new, but you can really clean them up if you want to. Some may say this is going too far, but I like to have all parts of the bass that I touch to be clean

The bass will look great if you do this. :)

thanks...
there is actually not that much rust... mostly a greenish gunk/tarnish
i was wondering if there was a liquid solution that I could soak the screws in and possibly the bridge that may make the cleaning easier?

There is a product called Naval Jelly which will take off rust and corrosion on parts like screws.

I am sure that there are other products available. I would check at a hardware store or and auto parts store.
