Check out the Tech 21 VT Bass Sansamp Character series bass pedal. Although not strictly a distortion pedal, it can get pretty dirty tones like playing thru a Vintage Ampeg SVT (which it is mean to emulate) stack at top volume. It seems to get a lot of praise for the tones you can get out of it. Give it a try at a store if you can. Understand though, from all I've heard, it's one of those devices that may take you a while to get the hang of it, but once you get the hang of it, it's supposed to be teriffic. I plan on getting one myself a some point.

What Bats said.

I use a SansAmp Bassdriver, it's the best part of my rig. Built like a tank and always reliable.

Although I'm looking for a different sound than you're after (much more old-school!) the same principles apply, and I can +1 the SansAmp suggestions. A cheaper alternative, and one definitely not to be sneezed at, is the Behringer BDI21. There's a marvellous bit of A/B comparison with tracks from both the Behringer and the SansAmp on TalkBass, here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294957. Good discussion, too. You can see clearly that it's not simply a case of the more expensive unit being the "better"!
