Just thought I'd share my custom thumbrest for my 2010 MIA 5 string Precision, got it from a guy in the U.K. I scoped on ebay, his profile name is PABLOVIBE, great guy too, he does really nice work. Here is his website

...and here is the thumbrest installed (It's Brazilian Rosewood)

That looks very comfortable! Wouldn't do for me - I'm a thumb-floater - but it would be much more usable than the 2 traditional Fender thumbrest positions.

Nice install. I see that you have it mounted in the "bright" area. Most of the thumb rest manufacturers have a paper template packed with their rests recommending that the rest be placed at the fingerboard screw half way between the pickup and the base of the neck in the more 'mellow' area. I have tried both locations and prefer 'mellow'. Playing in that bright area in long gigs can cause tired fingers due to the lateral tension on the strings that close to the bridge. But it does give a unique sound in the mid range of the A and D strings.

That's a nice looking P-Bass !!

I prefer the traditional placements of the thumb rest or finger rest, primarily because I don't use them. Where this one is would be in the way for me. I use the "E" string as a thumbrest and only remove my thumb when playing the "E" string then right back to the "E" string when not playing it. Using this method I have from the fretboard all the way to the bridge to work with and I'm not locked into playing in one place so I can get the full range of tones. Two of my favorite basses are first generation P-basses so they have bridge and pickup covers on them, so those spots are out of play but I have the rest of the range. Everyone has their own way of doing things which is of course why different players sound different and that is good! When you find what works best for you, stick with it.

Thanx guys, I use this sometimes and the pickup too, but I also float around for diff tone, and play with a pic sometimes too :D I thought of a ramp but decided I just wanted a lil p/u extesion to rest on at times, this position does give you alot of midrange clarity perfect for uptempo std "ROCK" type stuff. btw the new Fender P 5 string is very nice, just what would expect from a passive MIA P

Thumb rest? I don't need no stinking thumb rest. Just kidding to each his/her own. Won't get that feel if your not comfortable.
