La Bella says the string should be wound on string post with colored area of string end touching it only- no bare string touching or it will break.

All strings fit except for my low e string. About 3/4" of bare string touching string post when wound up to tension.

I am assuming everyone else has same happen on their P's?

Did yours break , or is it ok that way?

PS- I unwound the strings first, and nut slots are big enough, and my bass is not string thru.

That shouldn't be a problem. Just out of curiosity, how many times is the string wrapped around the post?

Thanks so much for your reply!

Each string is wound 2.5 to 3.5 times. None had extra length cut off except a few inches of the low e. The low E has 3.5 winds, though it is hard to see the skinny first winde from the bare string side. Here's how it looks:

The strings are bare on the string tree, but I guess that doesn't matter...

Here's the whole bass, just for fun:

By the looks of the pictures, those look like they are extra long scale strings. All of my silk wrappings are just short of the nut. Mine have silk wrapping under the string tree too.

Don't worry. I've got an American Standard with La Bella FS flats on and the 'E' is identical to yours.

I raised this issue when I first put them on, too, and was told that this is normal: it is and they sound great.

Enjoy!

Everything looks fine. I wouldn't worry.

Your bass looks great and the strings are installed correctly. I used Labella flats on my 1966 Precision bass for years and i always had part of the " speaking length" of the string wrap around ehe post. It's fine that way.
Don't worry about it.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I really love the tone and gauges of this set, so I am going to stick with these. Glad to know they are gonna be ok.

I also heard that the GHS Precision Flats also has an extra long E for the only long scale set (34 +) of those flats. Im now going with the D addario Chromes .100-.045 instead of both the Labellas and the GHS, but wish this set would run with a .105 E string (like the GHS) down to the .045. The .100 is a little too light. Plus these are a little brighter, a little less thump than other flats. Hopefully, with more time the tone will improve.

More critical with Labella's is the bridge setup as they should the top loaded and definitely not body-through strung.

I use the GHS 3050 (Regular) and the GHS 3025 Flats. BOTH of them have the very same amount of un-silked base string on the machine as the Labellas on yours do.

I used Labellas years ago, the 760M's. Broke a bunch of them set up body-through.

I just replaced my Chromes (too bright and tinny for a flat, even after time breaking) with GHS Precisions. Like La Bellas, the Chromes didn't like the string through body on my 08 Am Stnd. I strung the GHS P's through the body quite easy, but with the 105 gauge touching the E string post (even through the body!! ) due to the extra ,(extra) long scale plus.

Does anyone know if the newer packaged GHS precisions have the more consistent tone through all the strings? Im using an older set of Precisions that sounds like the E and A belong to another series of strings compared to the D and G.

I have new GHS Precision flats on my two Squiers and they are perfectly fine and balanced.

thanks Bathead.... I was still trying to confirm that through GHS. The packaging states "improved presence on the A and E strings". So I was wondering how they are now. When I was at the Bass Emporium I got into a conversation about flatwounds, and most players agreed the gripe about the Precisions was due to the tone difference between the strings (A and E were much darker than the D and G)but that they have improved now. I just wanted to check again before ordering a new set.

Has anyone used the light guage GHS Precisions (95-45) on a PBass. Is the .95 gauge too narrow for the nut, do you loose some thump with that lighter E string?
