Hey guys. First post. I just bought an '84-'87 Japanese P-Bass (Vintage White/maple). It feels so light compared to my other Fenders that I'm wondering if it's basswood? I guess I just assumed that it was alder until I received it and saw how light it feels.

I thought I read somewhere that the Japanese Fenders didn't start using basswood until 1990; and that prior to that most of them were alder. The exception being if it was a transparent blonde finish - then it was ash. Anyway, I was wondering whether any of you Fender experts could shed any light on it? Thanks a lot.

My 85 Jazz Bass Special (Japanese PJ) has a basswood body.
