So has anyone on here tried the John East P -Retro preamp. If so, what do you think. I pulled the trigger on one, but wifey said it's a "Christmas" present...so it'll be at least a month before I can try it out.

Well, my new John East P-Retro is installed. Took me a little while to install, as I messed up my first pickguard because I had the (charge light) bezel too close to the preamp. Another issue I had was the shafts were a little long, and the knobs were to high above/off the pickguard. I sent an email to John, and all I can say is "Fantastic" customer service. He gave me a great location for the bezel to be installed, and he also brought to my attention that the shaft height coming through the pickguard was adjustable via the nut on the underside of the pickguard.

I haven't had much time playing around with it, but during a 10 minute session, I can say that the tones are endless, and it makes my P bass sound incredible!! The deep boost is fantastic, and allows for me to get a very nice creamy/thumpy tone. Like Butta baby!!!

Info from the John East website:

The P-Retro is a simple but flexible active/passivebass preamp equaliser which offers huge tonal variation to one of the most popular styles of bass of all time, without the need to permanently modify the instrument itself. P-Retro features two stacked knobs each with a pull-switch, class A FET input stage and a high quality relay for pure passive bypass. Power is provided by an internal rechargeable battery.

The normal volume control becomes the Volume/Tone Stack and works in exactly the same way as the P style bass original controls, passing the passive signal directly to the jack. When the volume control is pulled up, the active circuit is switched in, post passive tone control, and adds 2.5dB of gain with a flat response. Additionally, the upper knob allows either a mid boost, or a combined bass/treble boost. The lower knob sets the variable frequency points for either mode.

Very cool!

One thing I do miss from my Stingray is the versatility of an active preamp.

Black on black is cool, too!

Thanks!
Yeah, I've been a Stingray user in the past, which is part of the reason why I decided to add an active preamp to one of my Fenders.

Here is a video review I did of the preamp, in case you're interested.
