Hi all, can anyone advise me (Brother Dave ?) if its possible to swap a MIM P Bass neck for a Fender licenced Jazz Bass neck ie Mighty Mite ? i remember many years ago trying out 2 pre CBS basses at a store in London and chose a July 64 jazz in preference to a similar age Precision for purely physical reasons namely small hands ! i love the sound i get from my current bass but i find the finger stretching down near the nut quite painfull after a 3 hour gig doing fast rock n roll, this was not a problem with my old jazz, ok ok i could play further up the neck but i lose that beautifull deep piano like sound, to sum up are the neck pockets the same and any other differences,/snags i might come across, if i could afford the 13,000 pounds asking price for my old bass (they got it off me for 200 pounds in ´76 !! but at this moment even a Squier jazz would be a an expense the wife would not understand....Thanks Peter

Should be no problem, to my understanding, the dimensions of the P-bass and Jazz bass are the same at the point where it joins the body, they only really differ pretty much down by the nut.
Any licensed Fender neck should fit regardless of whether it's a P or a J.

In a related matter, I know the most popular mod is to swap out a Jazz neck for the neck on a Precision, but has anyone ever done the opposite and put a P-bass neck on a Jazz? I never hear of anyone doing that, yet I know there are plenty of people (including myself) that prefer the feel of a P-bass neck, I would think it more common than it apears to be.

Yes, the Mark Hoppus bass is a P-neck on a Jazz body, but with a P-bass pickup. I agree, I don't see many doing this, either. I wonder if players who desire a J pickup configuration with a P-bass neck profile gravitate towards higher-end brands.

The relatively inexpensive Vintage AV4 has just this configuration, though it's a 22-fret neck and a slightly different body shape. Excellent bass - Trevor Wilkinson pickups and brass-barrel bridge, proper quality woods: American alder body and maple neck, Indian rosewood fingerboard. All the reviews I've read praise the instrument, and remark what good value it is. It does have a very good sound indeed, though I've not played one personally (yet!).
