Need some help from the single coil P aficionados.

My CIJ single coil blue floral P reissue went dead at a gig last night. (luckily on the last tune.) No gain from the volume control. Tone control brings up a weak thin signal.

Tech says the pickup probably went.

He has a Seymour Duncan pup and a Fender Pup in single coil. I won't be able to do much testing in advance. Any opinions on which would be most accurate for the original single coil P tone?

I use TI flats and a mute, love the thick fat tone with midrange bite that I get.

Thanks guys
:D

It really all depends on what pickups they are (more specific than brand name).

Well as best I can tell there are only 2 Seymour Duncan P bass single coils made. So any knowledge about either one would be helpful. I can't find any info on a single coil P pup replacement currently made by Fender so that's as much as I know for now.

i got the american 1962 reissue pickup in my fender, honestly i dont see how any other precision bass pickup could sound better than a fender made one.

Need to go out and try other P basses equipped differently than yours.

To the OP, depending what kind of sound. Duncans usually sounds full/thumpy with lots of load end, like a P pickup should be just a little more boomy imo. Good luck on whatever pup you decide on :)

The Scpb-1 shouldn't have any logo on the face of the pickup and also have staggered pole pieces and waxed cloth wire covering.
That pickup would be ideal if that is indeed what you have there.

The Scpb-2 looks similar, but no staggered pole pieces and plain enamel wire. That one will probably give you a notably punchier tone. (Should get the job done, but might not be what you're going for in the long run).

The Scpb-3 wouldn't be what you're looking for either. (Think almost a Jazz type tone, but hotter) Luckily that one is easy to spot due to the 1/4" pole pieces. (hence the "Quarter Pound" name)

As far as Fender pickups, there might be a part number on the base-plate. If not, I'm not too sure how you could decipher what it is you even have.

I would give the Duncan a shot, just so long as it's not the QP. I personally like the Scpb-2, but it definitely isn't going to give you a true "vintage" tone.

Hope that helps.

I went with a Duncan, but I don't know what model it is. He had 2 , one had a white cover around the coils and the little pinhole in between the the A and D poles looks to be sealed. The other was black over the coils and the pinhole was open. No other identifying marks that I could see on either model, no "basslines" logo.

He seemed to think the white coil cover model would be most similar to the one I was replacing so I went with that. Sounds fine to me but still curious if anyone knows what pickup that would be based on my description?

Thanks

Gee. White ribbon? Really? All the SD's are black. Fenders are black, except the real Telecaster bass, it had white waxed cord. SD does not currently list a SCPB with a white cover in cord or ribbon! Don't know what you have there. You should find out from your tech.

I would have went with one from Curtis Novak or Lindy Fralin. Fralin pickups are top notch and Novak's strong too....but if you're happy that is what matters.

The 51 RI basses have back cord too

So what you might have is a repro Telecaster Bass pickup, since they were white cord wrapped.

My '94 blue flower. I tried Lindy Fralin, then I just put a Fender '62 RI pup in it. Big tone, less noise. Solved all my problems.
But I'm a '62 kinda guy.

PS-My original '51 Fralin sounded better than the stock Japanese pup. White ribbon too.

Uhhhhh. That is not a single coil pickup. That bass has been routed for second generation split pickups.

If noise was a problem you could have gotten the Lindy Fralin or Curtis Novak split wound single coil shaped pickup without destroying the collector value of that bass.

Blue flower basses even if CIJ are always going to be desirable to collectors, just not that one.

The spilt wound single coil pickups cost more, but have the same RFI rejection characteristics of the second generation P-Bass pickups without destroying the instrument's collector value. I have one of the Fralin's and like it a lot. Lately I've been keeping that bass out for homework.

The S.D. SCPBIII is a wonderful pickup for the money (about half what a Fralin costs) and I use one of those SCPBIII's too. The main thing it has going for it is sensitivity. SD also makes an Antiquity single coil pickup, at least they did. Those sound close to a stock 51-53. The stock Fender pickup in the 51 RI I got lacked character. The next single coil pickup I'm going to try is the Novak, if there is a next single coil pickup in my future.

@brotherdave:

I know its not a single coil. It had a single coil, stock, and I put the pictured Fender '62 RI pup in it.

I did buy and had installed the split wound single coil Lindy (white ribbon I referred to) That's the one I mentioned, but not much better. Bigger sound, but still noisey. I had the bass rewired and re-grounded. Still not much better.

Then I decided just to put the '62 in there after aloooooot of consideration and thought. Especially because once it was routed, there goes the value, as you say. But I love the unique finish and would never sell it because of that. So I am not so concerned about what it'll be worth in years to come. For me it looks great and sounds fantastic now, so I am really happy with it. Something I will enjoy playing my whole life.
