I am going to be making my old Squier Affinity P into a fretless (before I do my fender Jazz) and I figure it'll be easier to work with the neck off of the bass. I had this squier in pieces in my parents basement for years and the neck twisted a little near the body end, not terrible but you cannot intonate the last 2 frets on the top 2 strings. The little bit of info I have been able to dig up is when the neck is still attached to the body without strings, you loosen the tension off the truss rod to prevent warping. So I was just going to loosen the truss rod and remove the neck from the bass. Anybody ever done this and have a little insight for a rookie?

i had the neck off my old 64 jazz more than a new brides nightdress, never touched the truss rod once and every time i put it back on it was perfect, all i can say is be careful unscrewing the bolts and look for any shims that could be underneath...Peter

I've been working on a P bass project and have had to remove and install a new neck, (more than once, as it turned out), and I found this cool and pretty inexpensive rubber padded clamp at Sears that was just ideal for this job:

You can use it to clamp the neck together and align it, before you insert the neckplate screws. Also, because of the rubber padding, it does not put extra pressure on the frets. And, it has a one handle release. Cool tool for working with bass or guitar necks... worth every cent.

Avoid trouble...don't use an electric screwdriver.
