Well, and this is just me, but if I'm paying over 1,000 dollars for an instrument I shouldn't have to change anything on it. I assume we are only talking split coil P bass here, right? If so, and money is no object for you, then I would suggest either the AVS 57 or 62 RI P basses. If money is REEEEAAAALLLLYYYY not an option, then either the CS 59 or Pino P bass would the cats booty. If you wanted to save a little cash then the Classic 50's P would get the job done, no question.

It's a pretty exciting time right now. Fender is putting out P basses that stack up to the classics at all price points. My only other advice is try as many as you can, and have fun in your search. Good Luck.

Well, when I say "money is not an issue," I mean within the context of a hundred dollars or so plus or minus the price of a new American Standard. I'd love one of those $2,000-3,000 custom guitars, but I'd also love $2,000-3,000 to spend on one.

I'm not sure what I'll do. Most I'll ever do is form a small group with a couple of buddies and maybe play a few small shows here and there until I'm out of college and become a working stiff, so I don't think I need a Custom Shop model (though, it would be nice.) I'll check out the other models you've recommended. I never really thought too much about them before.

If I do go for a new Precision Bass, I might just bring it home and see how I like it. I can always take it in and get work done to it later, right? Like I said, I'm not new to bass, but I am new to having my own rig. I just got a steal on an Ashdown ABM combo amp on eBay; basically am paying 1/3 of its MSRP price back when it was new three years ago. It's shipping from a guy who bought it new and never moved it outside his studio, never gigged once. Maybe that'll end up all the tone I need, plus my fingers of course.

Who knows. Things are happening pretty slowly and if I need more advice, I'm sure I'll be around here.

Thanks!

Ashdown makes terrific amps, you won't regret it. :)

I'm sure I'll adore it. I was looking at amps, but wasn't really planning on buying one until later in the summer, and was prepared to spend about what I did on the Ashdown.

So when I saw it for the price it was at, I figured I'd have to be a fool to let it slip away. So I got it, and in about a week I'll be playing it.

Still have to figure out a plan to get that P-Bass, though. eBay always has great deals on guitars, but I really want to play my instrument before I buy it. Who knows, maybe I will check out one of the American Vintage Series basses. All depends how much money I make this summer. In either case, I'm sure I'll come back to school with a kickass bass rig.

Well, just bought my new '08 US Standard Precision Bass from Guitar Center. They just put out a new model that day; this thing didn't have a finger print on it! When I first got there, I took down a three-tone sunburst/rosewood neck to play around with. Rosewood feels great, but I still prefer Maple. The model I really wanted and ended up going home with was a black shell with the maple neck.

I got to say, this thing is a vast improvement over the real pieces-of that my brothers insist on buying. Definitely the best instrument I've ever invested in. I have no problems as far as playability goes - it's just fantastic. The neck feels great to me, maybe not as comfortable as a vintage model might, but I've never played one of those, and I'm also coming off of playing an AMS Stratocaster so maybe I'm just jaded as to what it ought to feel like. This thing sounds great through my Ashdown combo amp. Don't think I'll be replacing anything on it anytime soon - maybe some Rotosound strings I've had my eye on, but the pickup is fine for now.

Overall, I'd recommend this bass to anybody looking to spend about a thousand bucks and head home with a wonderful sounding, excellent playing instrument. An American Vintage Series or Custom Shop might sound and play better, but you get what you pay for the the NAMS is one hell of a bang for the buck. Once I'm out of college, I might buy a real vintage P-Bass and use this as a backup model, but until then, this is what I had to spend and I couldn't be happier, and that's what really matters.

I've been using message boards for most of my adult life, and I have never learned how to post pictures on them.

I see an "Img" code, but how do I post a file from my computer?

Tim

From your computer, you will need to find an image hosting site such as photobucket. Create an account and upload your photos there, you can resize them to message board size(640X480, I think). Once uploaded(if you're using photobucket), look under the photo at the 4 different links. Click on "IMG code" and it will copy it for you, then come here and paste away. You won't need to use the "IMG" button on here if you do it like I described since it already puts the [IMG]'s where they need to be.

I liked the two-tone sunburst better -- feel and sound are awesome!

Tell you what, I'm going to my buddy's house tomorrow where my Ashdown is sitting, and I'll snap some photos of the whole rig and try to post them when I have some freetime.

I'm kind of thinking about putting one of those classic pickup covers on - the silver tray-looking thing - and I wouldn't mind a thumb rest above the neck near the top of the pickguard, because I do a lot of finger picking at the neck heel. I think it'd all look pretty cool personally.
