On Monday I shall buy a brand new Fender Precission Bass, but I have decided to get the American one, not the Amesrican standard (it was ordered two weeks ago, so the american one was still avaliable) and I hope I will not regret that I didn't wait for the new edit.
Is the difference really big?

For the first sight the picguard is more nice in american standard one :)
I belive the new bridge may better, but the pruce is also higher, so maybe my decision was right.

(sory for my english)

I have to say, in this case anyway, you get what you pay for. This American Standard P bass is now (again), what I feel is an industry standard. I have a ton of basses, from Alembics, to Music Mans, Fenders, Laklands, Gibsons etc. This P bass, fits like it was made for me. The "C" shape neck has the edges at the frets rounded to fit your hand better, Satin finish on the back of the neck for speed, and "non-stick" characteristics, glossy Maple fretboard, Low ratio lite tuning keys (good for studio work), Balanced for stage playing with the heavy sustaining neck through the body or top load Bridge. Immaculate sunburst finish with Tort pickguard,(that looks had picked), and a case that could survive a nuclear explosion, and you can stand on if you feel the need. $1200.00 street. Yea, I'd say it's a hell of a deal for an American P Bass with all the goody's, and no damn S-1 swithch. Ken

As for the satin finish I have to say, that I have got a Stratocaster, wich Was Satin finished, and now the nect is gloss. I have bought this Strat in 1995, so 13 years was quite enough to change this - I shan't count the satin finish in plus.
Anyway I just can't wait till I'll be able to compare those two, maybe I will just sell this one and try to get the new american standard P-Bass, but it's still unavalaible in Poland.

I hope you have the same excitement I did when I got my first Fender. Back in the day, The bass and case came seperate, and you still got a cord, strap, and a polishing cloth. We also got a little booklet, and inside , we could send away for a registered warranty card. When it came, it had your model, with you serial number on it. Ah, the good old days! It took me about a week to get the hardshell "coffin" case, and it was so cool back then, kinda of heavy, wouldn't want one now. The bass came with standard medium flatwound strings on it, and the action was great. Got it from Nolde's in Flemington, NJ

How does the new American Standard P (or J) basses sound vs the previous American Standards? I noticed they got rid of the s1 switch (personally I like this and hear a difference on the P bass vs on the J bass where I really don't hear much of a difference with the s1), but its the same pick ups, just some cosmetic changes e.g. the heavier bridge(I prefer/wish they put a BADASS III on this as stock), lighter tuners, and new finish? So I assume it should sound/feel the same as the 2003-2007 P or J basses which had the S1 switch? The new case is better vs the "old" molded shape case. Anyone compare the sound of the new P or Js??

I should have known something was up 4-5 months ago since my local music store was slashing the prices on the American Standard basses and guitars. They were selling new 2007 P or J basses with sunburst finish for $799 NEW when these normally go for ~$1100-1200

Great to hear that the new American Standard P bass is great to play.
I have an MIM jazz with upgraded Gotoh bridge and Haussel pick ups
(very good humless sounding) and played a few weeks ago with a P bass (pre S1) in our blues band in the praktice place. It was still a huge difference in sound and bass underlayment. Very fine sound (through my SWR stack with Tube Basspreamp from GP Lightstone from Gunnar Preuss (Berlin)
So I ordered a new P bass in vintage look, sunburst with tortoise shell. I have to waite some time, cause there not in stock in Europe jet. I´m looking forward when the P arrives.

Willem from The Netherlands (Friesland)

I played a few of these at a local music store and they're really nice. I prefer the vintage reissue P-Bass, but the new American Standard is an improvement over the '07 model.

So, I played a few of these the other week and I thought I'd give my honest review.

First off let me start by saying that I've never been a big fan of the old American Standard, American Series, or New American Standard fretboard radius. I like my basses to vintage specs, and while I love B width P bass necks (they are my favorite) I find the necks on all three of these model P basses to be ruined by the "modern" 9.5 radius. I'm not a guitar player, I don't want my basses built like a big guitar, and what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander.

With that out of the way...

First thing I noticed was the finish on the neck. Wow, Fender's finally gotten it right. Next to the Vintage style finish found on the classic and RI instruments, this is the best. Actually, I'm almost tempted to say better. It's smooth, without being to thick. The neck played quick right from the get go, no break in time required. Very nice.

Next after playing two of them I got an A/B going...

First, the new finish I could either take or leave. It's nice, but I think, and lets be honest here, that it's a bit of hype on a cost cutting method. However, acoustically, both basses did sing very well. In any event, the "fit and finish" on both basses was awesome.

Next thing I noticed was the tuners. I dreaded the press release when it read "lightweight" tuners. All I could think of were those terrible plastic casing tuners that came on the American Series Deluxe Basses. Not so! These things are the real deal, and very strong, while being very light. The overall balance of both instruments was great, the tuners were super smooth and effortless, but held tune perfectly. Very well done indeed.

The pick ups. This is one of the few sore spots I had with this bass. It's the same pup from the old American Series P basses. Not to be mean, but these pups are just flat out "neutered". Where's the punch? They are very smooth, and safe sounding...if I wanted that I'd play J basses. The Classic 50's P bass pup is alot hotter and more muscular. As far as tone that bass slaps the NAS P around like a ragdoll, and sounds more like a P bass should sound.

Last, and I saved this because it's the thing I was most blown away by. The New High Mass Vintage Bridge. I'm not BSing here, and I'm not kissing up. This is probably the single most important innovation in hardware to happen to the Fender Bass since the old two saddle bridge was replaced. I'm nothing short of stunned by it. Fender has managed to get all the performance with this bridge of a BAII, while holding onto the stability and pure Fender sound of the old threaded saddle bridge, and giving you the string through bridge/body option. Coupled with the thick barrel saddle 70's styling, this is a true innovation in the sense that it does the job better then anything before it, yet holds onto everything that was great from it's heritage. It's such a subtle addition to the bass when viewed against everything else, yet it makes the most impact. Of all the things that FMIC has done to the Fender Bass line since taking over, this I think, would make Leo the most proud. Everything you could ever need, nothing you don't want, and it looks great. Hats off guys.

Overall, after leaving, playing these two new P basses left me wishing I could get along with the modern fretboard specs. If I could, I would have left with the Oly White Bass I played that day. A definite step in the right direction guys.

Great review, and having played these as well I found myself generally agreeing. If I only had $1,000 to spend on a bass, I'd get one of these in a heartbeat. But if I had $1,500 I'd rather opt for the 57 reissue as it still feels and sounds better to me and is worth the difference in cost. The new basses are very good, however, and will undoubtedly give decades of enjoyment.

^^^TheKingofPain, I am looking at buying one of the new '08 Precision Basses sometime in the next month. I've been playing on my brother's basses for the past several years, but I'm in college and I need a bass of my own to keep playing now.

Money isn't an issue because I have two jobs and have been saving my money for months, so if I buy an '08 P-Bass at a store, would you recommend buying a new set of pickups right there and having them installed before I even take it home? To read that the pickups are a "sore spot" on the instrument is certainly discomforting, especially from someone who has a history with the instrument. I've played P-basses new at stores throughout the past several years at various times, and I find it a very comfortable guitar for me and I think I'll enjoy it very much, but if spending another $60-70 on better pups is going to bring it up just one more notch as far as sounding "like a P bass should", then I wouldn't mind doing it.

Thanks for any advice you can give me! I've been looking forward to owning one of these classic instruments of my own for too long.
