Did you know the good news? Fender will launch in January 1st of 2011 limited-edition Anniversary versions of the popular Telecaster and Precision Bass guitars to celebrate their 60th birthday.

Unfortunately I've found no pics of the bass yet, but the Telecaster is basically an American Standard model with 50s styling, kinda reminds me of the 50th Anniversary P-bass. Hopefully it will be something a little different this time.

Yeah, I just saw it on the Fender FB page. Pretty cool, can't wait to see it.

I guess that the 2011 60th Anniversary series would include three sub-models for both the Tele and Precision. Yet I saw an American Standard version of the Tele, but I bet that Fender will also release a Custom Shop version and an American Deluxe variant to fit the bill as they did with the 50th Anniversary Stratocaster models in 2004.

The 50th Anniversary Precision of 2001 came in both Custom Shop and American Series versions only. For the 2011 60th Anniversary models, an American Deluxe variant wouldn't be bad at all.

I'd like to know what they're doing so I'll know whether I want one. A true vintage NOS reissue from the CS priced under $2,500 may be really tempting.

I've just got a sneak peak on the products page, the 60th Anniversary P-Bass is essentially a nice blend of vintage and modern features - a split single-coil humbucking pickup, a high mass vintage bridge and a comfy C-shape maple neck with graphite reinforcements complement the dinstinctive early 1950-style black bakelite pickguard and chrome control plate.

Image

I believe this bass can be easily considered as a reincarnation of the famous Cowpoke bass from the early 1990s. In fact, the 60th Anniversary P-Bass shares many of the aspects of the Cowpoke such as the '51-style pickguard and the post-1957 headstock, except for the 20-fret graphite-reinforced maple neck, the heavy-duty vintage bridge and the Tele Bass control plate.

Image

For me a "new" Cowpoke would be an American Deluxe version of the 60th Anniversary model with a PJ setup and active electronics.

The Custom Shop produced the '51 Precision Bass Custom in 1995, which was similar to the 2011 60th Anniversary Precision Bass, having a Telecaster-shaped headstock and an additional Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position.

The 4 new CS models are more appealing to me than this one, but they're only making 15 each. So I'll never own one I'm sure.

Here's the pic from the CS forum:

So I got to see these at the NAMM show but they were already sold by then. Too bad they couldn't figure out a way to produce more so they'd be attainable, but oh well. They sure looked great.

I WISH I COULD HAVE ONE. YES I DO.

Someone asked...is this a good bass guitar?

Yes this is a good bass guitar to own. To Play. Yes it will be. IF you like the SOUND of a current P-bass and like the FEEL of an old one. THIS one will feel old and sound new.

Long term, a great investment too. Buy all of them you can get.

Old school guys like me...we love the basic design....the simplicity of operation. Two controls only. Perfect!
We know that the KEY to good bass is our SKILL.
I can take a Chinese made P.O.S. bass and play it. BUT this is an instrument to love and cherish. CHERISH it whoever is fortunate enough to get one. You are blessed!

As a former Cowpoke owner I feel qualified to say, that you are way off base. or OFF BASS. LOL.

This is a way different instrument from a Cowpoke. MUCH simpler are more PURE. The Cowpoke was it's own animal, and a really good bass in it's own right, especially the ones with active EQ.

I look at this anniversary bass as a cross between a Tele and a passive Second Gen. A very good if NOT excellent tribute to 60 yrs of Fender bass power. Those are two things the Cowpoke was not. The Cowpoke was a sock in the eye active EQ slam. BUT you are right it did pay tribute to what went before and sometimes I miss my old blonde Cowpoke. HOWEVER....this is NOT a Cowpoke. Not by a mile!

Dave, these were indeed beauties, all of them. Of course, they said we are always able to order our own custom bass built to these same specs, just won't have the anniversary plate and will cost more because it will be a true custom.

The Cowpoke was a hybrid design which borrowed elements from three different basses: the '51 reissue (pickguard), the Precision Plus Deluxe (22-fret neck/Kubicki electronics) and the JP90 (smaller headstock shape).
