Need that Jack Casady overdriven Versatone amp kind of sound. Like on "Watch Her Ride" by Jefferson Airplane, off their Worst of Jefferson Airplane album.

Geezer Butlers playing on the Bassically/NIB intro is another example of the sound.

Thanks for your help.

In my search for the ultimate bass distortion/overdrive pedal, I have found peace with Fulltone's Bass-Drive
http://www.fulltone.com
I had always looked for a distortion that didn't muddy up the tone of the BASS rather than sound thin without any color to the natural sound. I tried a vintage Big Muff, Big Muff (Soviet), Boss Bass Overdrive, MXR Blowtorch, Zinky True Grit and Tech 21 SansAmp Driver DI. All lacked the thunder of a BASS... Until the Bass-drive. It is very versatile and is two sided, with one side being boost and the other being the overdrive. but I'll stop rambling check it out. Below are my setups

2006 (Fender 60th Ann) American Deluxe P
1998 MIM Jazz V (modded)
Ampeg SVT-2 PRO (USA)
Ampeg SVT-410-HLF
Ampeg B200R
1968 Fender Bassman
Fulltone Bass-Drive

You might also consider a VT (regular, not deluxe); I am using one with my P bass, Little Mark III head and Aguilar 112 cab and sounds incredible...

I agree. I have a Tech 21 VT pedal and the tones I can pull out of it are amazing. The 'Character' knob lets be go from burpy vintage tube drive to screaming DFA1979 distortion in one turn :)

The Tech 21 VT Bass is a really good pedal. A lot of useable tones.
One pedal that is really on my radar now is the Catalinbread SFT.

I own an Ibanez Tone-Lok Phat-hed. It's done me well. It has a couple different modes that can bring it from mild overdrive to just fuzzed out nut-ness. Plus the pot knobs push down into the body and lock there, push em again and they pop back out. No more messed up settings cuz of my clumsy feet.

I used to use a DOD Overdrive, had a lot of distortion to it but no EQ control, so I switched the Boss ODB-3, absolutely love it.
