Dark Side of The Moon - the whole album. Nothing is more fun than jamming all the way through a classic album and changing moods with a scale change or even an effects change.

Panther,

Old classics of Christian composers are always inspiring, not just the words but the music. I played in churches for a lot of years, the new contemporary stuff is pretty lame. There isn't any heart to it, IMO, the songs fit a mold that people will go along with because it's "spiritual".

Before all of the arguments start, don't waste our time, like I said, IMO.

DVL,

I do the same thing, one of my all time favorites is, "Layla", want a good work-out? Try pretty much any Stevie Wonder.

Thank you for your comments and deeply reflective, thought filled points.

I found it necessary to use a passive Fender Precision Bass, to get the precise tonal result sought.

In fact, this last piece I worked on, was not an Old Classic actually, but rather, entirely new music altogether.

Especially Composed for a specific person, a well known, globally loved Religious Figure, to mark a National Occasion and Event of Historic Significance.

Normally, Composers wish their music to receive as wide an audience, as is humanly possible. But this music, written neither for profit or pride, was written with the intention of it receiving as limited an audience as is humanly possible, which is in my experience, a quite unique matter, which might require a great adjustment in thinking.

It is a gift of Love in Christ, Admiration and Friendship, which is just as well, because it has been a real labour of love. For everything about the Scoring of the Composition, the Musical Arrangements and Orchestrations, the Tracking Methods of capturing sound, and the Mixing and Mastering, has some kind of Spiritual Meaning and significance in the manner in which it has been done.

You could certainly give a very interesting talk about Music, Musical Instruments, Recording Studio Equipment and Methods full of perspicacious insight, that would elaborate into Profoundly Deep, Spiritual Truth, which I suppose, for me is the real point about it all. Perhaps it may be released, to a wider audience in years to come, when the proper time is fully come and completely appropriate.

Anyway, I was moved and humbled to receive a most gratifying letter of sincere and heartfelt appreciation, a while after the Event, the most beautiful and graciously spiritual letter I have received from anyone in my whole life. People who have heard about it, keep ringing me up and tell me I ought to have it framed.

But the great thing to bear in mind, is the fruit of the work that we do, the love and joy that comes back to us as a response. The Love of Christ compels us to give our hearts away, but we are given back, a great many more hearts in return.

This death or surrendering of self, is central to the transformation of life, through faith.

A Divine Exchange?

To be honest.

I try not to listen to other peoples work very much, because it can have the effect of subconsciously influencing one's own ideas, and one then becomes an 'echo' rather than a true, pure, 'voice'.

If you are going to Compose new music, I believe it behoves one to be a clear channel for something completely original, a VOICE with substance, rather than another 'shadowy' repetition.

The world needs to hear a clear authoritative 'Voice'.

In this respect, broadly.

I feel there are different levels of approach. Some Christian Music years ago was extremely amateurish in its Production Values. Today we have some Christian Music by a few artists, that can rival the very best of the world's Production Values.

But the point I want to press home, is that the very best of any form of ART, sets the standard by which all other art in the world is judged.

That is the ART that I want to hear, and see, and what I believe we need far, far more of.

Can that be achieved by setting our eyes and standards on the best the worldly influences around us can offer, and creating a religious version of that?

I do not, condemn anyone, that feels that is the way forward for them, far from it, all power to their elbow, they are for us, and not against us.

However I merely ask the question whether, is it not the case that if we are to do 'Gods' work, that we should be doing it 'God's' way?

In this respect, Originality and Creativity seem to be Absolute Hallmarks of any truly genuine work, actually instigated, by God.

Unless, we are in point of fact doing, 'OUR' work, for God. The critical difference being that 'self' is still in the centre.

Motivating us, by earthly means, rather than something totally beyond, everything we could ever ask or know.

Which to me at least, is what it is really all about, a complete difference, as between night and day.

"Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?

I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

You see..

I have the belief, that many, if not most of the very greatest expressions of ART throughout History, whether they be music, sculpture, painting, architecture, etc. are so, because they are inspired by some inner thought or some inner spirit, far, far beyond our own talents and gifts.

The point is, that such great Masterpieces, have set the absolute benchmark against which, all other works of art are seen and assessed in relation to, indeed in many cases these Great Masters, set the trend and directions that many others, latterly followed.

Historically, this is what the Greatest Christian Art does, and the profound effect it has upon the world, and all forms of art that follow it.

Let's be clear.

Our opinions, your opinion, and my opinion, is neither here nor there.

Modern Worship & Praise Church Groups are very popular and provide an important Ministry to the Church.

However, true Spirituality can only flow from a very close, personal walk and relationship in direct obedience to God and his revealed will.

For instance. People often want guidance for specific matters in their personal lives. But guidance from God is like the rudder of a ship. As long as the ship is in port tied up along the quayside, going nowhere, the rudder doesn't operate at all in any way whatever.

Most of the direction we need for The Christian Life is revealed in The Holy Bible. The thing is, it is ONLY as we move out, stepping forward in faith and obedience, that the 'rudder of guidance' can begin to operate, and the specific direction, we need for particular matters in our lives, become crystal clear.

Walking forward in Faith and Obedience to Gods Revealed Will is then.

'Spiritual'.

Genuine Spirituality, cannot be in truth transferred by some form of osmosis induced whilst listening to music.

Whilst such may serve us very positively, by providing both qualitative time and focus on God himself.

Providing a point where we can more fully open our hearts, becoming receptive and attuned.

Changing trends and forms of expression, within movements, are often generational.

Whether they are "spiritual" or not, is entirely dependent on the matters above.

Genuine Spirituality flows out of a relationship of faith and obedience.

A daily walk in very close relationship to God.

That is what being 'Spiritual' involves.

'An Inconvenient Truth.'

For some, perhaps?

When I said "Spiritual", is was a bit sarcastic. Over the years I've played with some who were extremely talented, to some who weren't. When the annointing is present, the music flows.

I had to smile when I thought of you bringing a Fender Precision into the church. When I first started playing in the church, in the early '80's, I had a "71 Precision, black, black pickguard and maple neck through a 500 watt Peavy head with a 2x15 cabinet. The Pastor caught a lot of flack because electric guitars and drums were not "spiritual", that's a direct quote. Even today there are those who feel that their opinion is the most important.

Music is a gift that some of us are fortunate to use, it's all about expression and it's not to be boxed or canned. Some may not use their gift properly and distract from those who do. It's all about growing as a person and as a musician.

Any way we can hear the work?

Currently working on assorted Iron Maiden stuff. Especially the real galloping stuff like Run to the Hills and The Trooper. It's not hard in terms of memorization, but the timing of the triplets and the carpal tunnel inducing use of only the first two fingers can really be challenging, especially after a long hiatus. I just got a new P-Bass and installed flatwounds and am loving life. First time with the flats really hooked me.

Just started on YYZ. Been playing for about 25 years. Don't know why I never bothered before. Give me 10 minutes and I can play pretty much any Iron Maiden tune. One of my faves is Moonchild. And, I say "pretty much" because some of them have some complex bridges. Steve Harris is the reason I started playing bass instead of guitar. Because I kind of style myself after him, sometimes I have difficulty with fairly simple basslines by making them too busy and throwing something in that there isn't really time for. I like to warm up with The Star Spangled Banner and Metallica's Orion.

That's one that will keep you busy for a while. The only band that has more songs in my computer is, The Who. For me there's no one other than John Entwistle, he's my all time favorite. While I equally admire James Jamerson, Geddy and a bunch of others, his bass parts gave me more trouble than anyone.

Always fun to be challenged.

Just thought that I'd bring this older thread back to the top because there were some interesting selections and some good tech hints in some of the posts.

------------------------------------------------------------------

While I'm posting, I'd like to mention that I just heard the Sarah Evans country song called "Suds in the Bucket". It has a great bass line and if anyone just wants something fairly easy to practice with, give it a try. Her band's leader and bassist is her brother, Matt Evans.

You can see a video presentation from http://www.CMT.com located in the link below if y'all don't have the Sarah Evans CD "Restless".

Various Live Versions Of John's Bass Solos For My Generation. I Often Wonder Why The Who Hired Pino When He Never Seems To Nail It.

Here's my latest work! I have a nice home studio that I pride myself on! At its core is a Yamaha AW4416. :)

After having played in cover bands for years, I decided a couple of years ago, to record my own works. My studio is called Baz Studios!

I play all instruments, composed and arranged it myself, engineered and mastered it, and retain all the rights to it. It is 100% householdsaint.

Thanks for listening :D

We follow the same path, householdsaint...my friends and I gave up playing covers years ago, and all we do now is get together at my home studio to write and record our own music.

It's liberating to have that kind of freedom, to not need to learn another's work, but develop your own instead.

Here's to following your own muse!!!!

Coinsidently, my name is Bob, and I use my P-Bass mainly to record my bass tracks :D
