Ok, so I just recently acquired a 1985 P-bass lyte. The owner bought it in 1985 and put it away without ever really playing it, no wear what so ever. The one thing and only thing I have done is put in a set of SD P/J Quarter pounders in it and am in love with the feel and sound I get from it. Anyways, I have spent alot of time on the internet trying to find out any info I can from this era bass(body wood, specs, value etc.) but have not really found too much about it. Does anybody have any knowledge or insight about this era bass ?

Hi BR5000,
Well, I'm pretty sure that these weren't around in 85. The spec's I'm going to post below say 89, though it seems to me that it was a bit earlier. But then, i probably recall inspecting some in late 88 and my mind is now old and feeble and ...uhhh...fuzzy!! At any rate, 89 sounds right, I guess.
I DO remember inspecting these and always liked how they played. Round about 88, Japan made product was really starting to be excellent stuff.
At any rate, enjoy!!

I used to play this bass back in college - around '92 at the local music store by my school. Man I wanted it so bad, but didn't have the funds. I wanted to have that '92 to befriend my '87 :)

Hi Bassflyer,
not sure where you found that, but there are models which sold in Japan that weren't necessarily made available in the U.S. (Maybe still are!)
When in doubt....pull my old price lists out!!! THe first appearance of the P Bass Lyte is in the Jan 1,1989 price list. So indeed, towards the end of 88 they had arrived in the U.S. for inspection before shipping to dealers in early January.
Best regards,
rob

You are right I'm sure...... I wonder where the OP's bass was made.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am really not worried too much as in the year it was made however I was led to believe this by reviewing the product dating on this site. The serial does start with an "A" though. It has chrome hardware with the badass style bridge, regular J bridge pickup , sunburst without the matching headstock. I will try to post some pics up if that helps . It looks alot identical to this one I found on ebay however mine came with the fender logo'd pups before I put the QP's in it.

Rob, hands down you are the man!! I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this. It did seem a little odd to be a 1985 but I have seen crazier things, lol. Regardless, I am in love with this bass !! Thanks again man! :D

Hi guys, sorry to resurrect an old thread but I thought this might be related.

I recently purchased what appears to be an '85/6 Power Jazz Special, which wouldn't be too strange except that it's a 32" scale model. The body style is quite similar to the P Lyte that you've posted, including active electronics and 4 controls, 2 vol and 2 tone. What's a bit curious is that this one, as well as the only other 3 32" models I could find after days of internet scouring, have different headstocks and tuners from the 34" models. The 32s aren't marked "Power Jazz" although all the pics I have seen do show a battery in the rear routing. None are front-routed. The headstocks are all painted black, but unlike many of the 34s I've seen, the necks have a clear finish and a skunk stripe. The serial on mine is a Made In Japan, # C010879 and the model number, which is the same on the examples I've seen, is PJM-65R, stamped on the base of the neck. I've only seen four others online, and each has been from a Japanese vendor. I have seen nothing on these 32" models anywhere else, or in any forums or in any literature.

Does anyone know anything about these? Were they predecessors to the P Lyte series? The resemblance is uncanny.

Thanks in advance, and I do apologize again for hijacking the thread. It did seem related, though, and as I said I'm having a fair deal of trouble finding out anything about these basses. (The bass pictured is the actual one I bought.)
