I bought a used Sting model P-Bass several years ago and the previous owner obviously changed the pick-up. It sounds great!!!!! I'd just like to know what it is. From what I can tell, it most closely resembles a Seymour Duncan Antiquity, but not completely. The Duncan (and every other '51 style pick-up) has a hole through the center on the top of the pick-up, this one has an indentation where that hole would be. I think someone may have dipped it in wax. The label on the back of the pick-up has a serial number and an unintelligable signature written in pen. I can't find any pics anywhere of the back of of the pick-up, so I can't figure out what company might have used this type of serial number and signature. I can't find a pick-up anywhere that's a total match. Could this be an original that someone had rewound? Maybe someone can give me some insight.[/img]Image

Don't know for sure what it is. However with that sticker on the baseplate of the pickup it isn't original Fender because the sticker is located where Fender attaches rubber foam. They would not have let one get out without the foam attached so the pickups could be adjusted. That would definitely have been caught. It could be Seymour Duncan or a real Fender first generation, but it isn't a reissue for sure.

I don't recall seeing stickers like that on Seymour Duncan's pickups. Lindy Fralin doesn't do that either. I've ran that part number over and over and can't find anything on that part number, so it must be a serial or a hidden mark to ID the bass in the event it was stolen, which isn't a bad idea but I would have used my driver's license number with my home state in front.

By the looks of it at first I wanted to say original Fender but when I saw the baseplate sticker that sort of knocked the bloom off the rose. Still could be original. Would have to inspect in person to give a better answer. But there should be foam where that sticker is located.

Abigail Ybarra at Fender signed things ABBY so it isn't her work. Can't really make the signature out but that is not Ms. Ybarra's. This sticker looks way too organized for the early to mid 50's at Fender where they were using pencils to write in cavities and on neck butts and body joints.

I'm in Nashville and I was thinkin' about takin it down to famous Gruhn's Guitars and have them look at it, but they practically charge you for walking through the door! Could it be an original that someone ripped the foam off the back and recoiled it? Maybe the sticker is from whoever may have recoiled it? Maybe it's hand made by some guy who works out of his workshop in his basement that no one's ever heard of? It really does sound good, very authentic. Kina buzzy at times, but that's a typical single coil for ya! I've got it set up with flatwounds and I tell ya, you could probably put it up against a real '54 and blind folded, couldn't tell which is which!!

Thanx, I'll check into that link! I actually got a great deal on this bass, I traded a Hofner Beatle Bass from the late 70's that had a broken truss rod straight up for this Stng bass with a tweed Fender case, a 1980 Squire II Strat and a Nashville Telecaster with hard case, which was three pick-ups plus an piezio active bridge! I wound up getting rid of the Strat and Tele, kept the Sting bass and tweed case and bought a RI '69 psychedelic blue floral Tele! All for a junky busted up Hofner!! The guy was a Beatles fanatic and wanted the Hofner in the worst way! I hated it, it was a piece of junk and felt like a toy!! I guess one person's junk is another's treasure!!

Looks like it's a Duncan Antiquity series! I e-mailed the pics to the Seymour Duncan website and they wrote me back saying that that is indeed what it is! They're running the serial number and are supposed to get back to me with more specifics about it! Thanx for everyone's help, and here's a little sampling of what it actually sounds like!

You all didn't need me to figure this out.

To me , that pickup looks like original 50's Fender, but the method of making an original 4 pole P-bass pickup is well known and any number of builders could be the source of this pickup,

I'm glad that you connected with Seymour Duncan. They will probably sort it out, but it looks pretty authentic with that thumb swell on the top.

Enjoy your Sting bass. I have lot of fun with mine.

I do enjoy it greatly!! Do you think Seymour Duncan could be wrong? It doesn't look exactly like the Antiquity I that they say it is. Oh well, at any rate, sounds great, especially with a set of flatwounds!! My guess is it's the closest you will get to an original without spending tens of thousands of dollars! Whoever owned the bass before me removed the pearl Sting inlay at the twelth fret and replaced it with two black dots and laquered over it. You can still see the rectangular outline up close, but from afar it looks like a beat up '54! I've gotten lots of compliments on it and plan to keep it forever!
