Hey guys i bought a 96 American Fender Deluxe Precision bass. It has both the precision neck pick ups and a bridge pickup. Im not a huge fan of the sound of the bridge pickup when i switch it to only the bridge pickup so i was wondering if anyone knows any good bridge pickups i cant put in it instead.
I play Heavy Rock Music
I was looking at Basslines pickups and i was thinking about putting in a Hot Stack For Jazz Pickup in the bridge
Anyone have any comments or recommendations?

I use the SD Hot Stack for Jazz (STK-J2) in a P-J bass, along with the SD vintage P (SPB-1). These pickups balance very well and give a great variety of tones. I also have 500k volume pots and a Fender TBX tone.

I also use 2 SD Hot Stack for Jazz in a J-J bass (also with 500k volume pots and Fender TBX.)

I usually play r&b, gospel, contemporary jazz, and some pop, but I think the SD Basslines are worth a try.

The American Deluxe bodies from the 1995-2009 period are routed for a humbucking Jazz pickup. You need to cover the humbucker slot with a piece of wood and leave the necessary space to properly fit a normal Jazz Bass pickup. Ideal for owners of the older US Deluxe Ps who want to upgrade their axes with the current 2010 features.

Not sure if Fender offers the 2010 Deluxe features as a direct replacement upgrade kit for the older Deluxe basses.

My main gripe with a stock P/J (or with a stock Jazz for that matter) is there is NO master volume control. Since you are looking for a replacement pickup set, I'd investigate wiring options that would give you a Master Volume control, a Blend control and then the tone controls. It is sometimes difficult to reliably balance the pickups otherwise.

I think Seymour Duncan pickups are a tremendous value, but there are other options which of course will certainly cost more. Some people to communicate with about your higher cost options would include Lindy Fralin, Curtis Novak and WILDE Pickups by Bill Lawrence. I am VERY pleased with my passive WILDE P/J balanced set, but I don't think WILDE has a stacked Jazz pickup. WILDE might make one for you though, yet I'm not positive about that. But their passive balanced P/J set is amazing and highly recommended.

I've heard that Bill Lawrence designed the humbucker of the older Deluxe Precision Basses. I believe that's also the same pickup as found on the discontinued Roscoe Beck signature series.

True. Bill Lawrence designed many innovative pickups for bass and guitar for both Fender and Gibson. Probably the most innovative electronizitian (new word I invented just for Bill Lawrence) since someone said "can I make it sound better?" If anyone could make it sound better, BL could. He could. I think that is his legacy. Making things sound better.

The WILDE pickups he has made for the past few years are groundbreaking but yet still sound very vintage. Due to the epoxy potting he prescribed they will have the same amazing tone 50 years from now. BL is a genius for sure and an unsung hero of tone geeks worldwide whether they play bass or guitar.

There has never been an electonizitian like him and we are not likely to see one like him again until someone invents a warp drive/transporter bass pickup.

The most often overlooked thing about BL is how well he plays. He is first and foremost a player! He knows tone and knows how to evoke a certain spirit from electronics that frankly nobody else has managed to find. Everyone else can only COPY, BL innovates.

I maintain and will until my dying day that Bill Lawrence's WILDE passive balanced P/J set is absolutely THE P/J bomb. Nobody can ever top that. Sheer P/J perfection in tone, balance AND in function. His control circuit, which is very unique, is genius and nobody else does it like that. Nobody. Anyone looking to do a passive P/J setup need look no further. Just make sure you have room for the extra wires you have to run to make it happen.

For which reason Fender chose to use a humbucker in the bridge position of the older Deluxe Ps instead of a normal P/J configuration as they did on the Pluses (Boner and Deluxe), Cowpokes and the current Deluxes?
