Hey People, I know this has probably been asked before and I went through a few forum pages to make sure my answer wasn't already there. I found nothing, so here goes...Can anybody tell me when Fender moved the finger rest from the "G" side to the "E" side? I found a P-bass at a store the salesman claims is a '74 and the finger rest is on the "G" side of pickguard. I thought they made it a "thumb" rest by then. But, we took off the neck to give it a truss rod adjustment and the date stamp said '72...we think. Of course the critical digit was not clear, but it was obvious it wasn't a "4". I think the finger rest placement is correct for a '72. If you can help a brother out, I'd appreciate it.

According to forum member bass-flyer in the thread in this Precision bass forum entitled "I need an answer(s) to settle a bet", it was '73-'74.

I confirm. When Fender moved the thumbrest (or fingerrest) also changed the color (and material) of the pickguard, from tortoise to black. So if you find a tortoise pickguard with thumbrest on the E side, it would certainly be a fake.

The pickguard on this particular bass is white. Natural finish ash body.

I think ash, white pickguard and G sided thumbrest are correct for a '72, not for a '74. First natural finished P basses went with white guard (I did see white pickguard on black P basses too).
All 74 P basses I saw went with black guard and E sided thumbrest.
Check Black&Molinaro book, page 61, for a gorgeous natural finished and G sided thumbrest P bass (white pickguard too) from 1970.

@Simoneisidoro
Thanks for your help. Got them talked down to $1250. Bass has rather heavy finish cracks on the body, Gibson style knobs, early Leo Quan bridge, both easy swap outs. By the looks of the headstock, it has a loose birdseye maple pattern. Frets could use some smoothing out. Comes with original hardshell case. Inside was original registration card ('75). Good deal, Yes? No?

It seems a fair price indeed. Do not forget to check the codes engraved on pots and those printed on the back of the pickup, to ensure that they are from '72 or nearby too.
If you want to restore the bass to the original conditions, you could easily buy '70s bridge and knobs on ebay:

Good luck mate!

Thanks, man. YOU ROCK! Knobs and bridge are no problem, I have both from a '76 lying around doing nothing.
