Back in August, I ordered an AV '57 P-Bass in White Ash through my local dealer and still haven't received it yet. When I spoke with him today, he told me that it probably will not be shipped until January or February of 2011!! He said it's because of Fender losing their paint supplier.

Has anyone else heard anything about this and/or have been waiting a long time for something that they have on order?

Just curious.

Cheers!

After doing a little bit of research on the different forums, it sounds like it's not bogus and I'm not alone on this according to this thread.

Well, that sucks. I'm just glad I seemed to have gotten just under the wire when I got my Jazz in March of last year, I ordered it from Musician's Friend and had it within a week. BTW, it has the Charcoal Frost Metallic finish, if it matters. (should have gotten the Candy Cola)

I always liked the Candy Cola but the Charcoal is really nice. I can't help but think somethings wrong with the picture when ordering is such a problem.

Maybe the economy forced them to scale back in manpower or, the online stores are buying them all up.

Calling Brother Dave, calling Brother Dave, we need some insight, lol.

He should like that.

I hate you ....
Seriously, I don't hate the charcoal, I got it becasue it seemed an unususal atypical color, but I've seen a number of pics like yours with the candy cola and a black guard (I swapped the guard on mine for a black one, too. Much better) and I like it a lot. I can't tell though, is it a sort of brownish red color? Sometimes it looks red, sometimes brown, sometimes somewhere in the middle.

You know I wasn't intentionally trying to be mean.
But you set yourself up for that one. :D

Post some pics of your charcoal/maple Bats. I have a few saved on my computer, but love looking at sweet basses.

And IMO it's sort of like a metallic cross between candy apple red and midnight wine. Lighting has alot to do with the color appearance. I did not like the color at first from looking at the Fender website pics. It was when I saw it in person that I wanted one. Right now in a dimly lit man-cave it looks almost deep burgandy.

Below is what Xhefri of the pacific northwest USA wrote after having talked to an unnamed Fender marketing person at this thread: http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?p=538402&sid=bf576a404fcdcfe9bccaf1564f235a52

"When I talked to a Fender rep in charge of marketing a while back, he told me that yes there was some paint supplier issues as one of their main suppliers went out of business and they were dealing with new suppliers. BUT, he also added that fender was in the middle of some patent issues over some of their colors and that was holding some things up too. He did not go into details.

He confirmed for a fact that fender did lay off a large number of workers when this recession hit and now they have been getting slammed with orders and they do not have the skilled craftsmen in place to meet the demand of orders. He said it was good that they have way more orders than projected, but frustrated in not being able to fill those orders in a timely manner due to a small work force. To put it bluntly, they are swamped with orders...."

The paint used on Fender and most other guitars is the same paint used on automobiles. Not sure about now, but at one time the paint Fender used was all Dupont. Dupont has not gone out of business of course. However there has been a worldwide shortage of some of the components used to make paint which has led to a reduction in output and price increases for paints of all types.

I know there doesn't seem to be a shortage of new cars rolling out, so what is up with that? Perhaps when making a $40,000 car you can spend a little more for paint and still clear a profit but on a $700 to $1000 guitar the paint price hike eats up way more profit percentage wise. So you have to negotiate to get the best price.

Fender would not buy their paint directly from Dupont, but from a Dupont distributor. It could be that Fender had a contract with a Dupont distributor to deliver paint at a certain price and the distributor couldn't meet the contractual obligation to Fender and other manufacturers due the unforeseen price hikes and the distributor was forced to close before they went bankrupt honoring the contract price. So a new distributor would have to be contracted. Dupont operates redundant paint manufacturing facilities. They periodically do shut down one plant for a safety review, but the other plants ramp up production until the other plant goes back online.

So far as I know Dupont is still making paint but in smaller quantities due to component material shortages. The law of supply and demand makes the price of anything go up when there is less of it. Some places have delayed road resurfacing projects because the paint used to put stripes on the new pavement is in very short supply and far more expensive than last year. This paint shortage hit this summer and continues.

It seems that one plant shutting down in the UK that made titanium dioxide cut the world supply of this essential paint component by 10%. There are other automotive paint components also in short supply. You can read more about it here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-06-30/akzo-ppg-sherwin-williams-profits-squeezed-by-paint-ingredient-shortage.html
