I have Amervintage '62 reissue. Fender flats 9050M.
No punch on low E string no matter what brand/guage I use.
I really have to bang on it to get it to sound nice.

Pup height is 7/64 E and A strings, 6/64 D and G strings. I measured height as per instructions on Fender site.

Action is 8/62 low E
7/64 A
6/64 D and G strings.

What can I do now?

That's simple. Forget Fender's recommendations and adjust that half of the pickup to what your ear hears as correct.

+1 to what Martian said. Up and down.
FWIW my P-Bass with LaBella's has no problem with punch or thump. I have that side of the pickup alot lower than the A side.

Or it may be a dead(er) string?

To get the punch you're after could mean a different technique. Playing with the joint of your fingers(instead of the knuckle) more toward the bridge will help ya. Works for pickstyle too. Adjust your tone knobs next.

i'm not a pedal player at all and dont use picks.... i find most times the bass lines i am playing are busy enough i can't reach down and adjust vol or tone... so... i learned how to get exactly the sound i want just through finger articulation.... play soft, dig in hard... play up close to the neck for that fat, warm round sound or back at the bridge for that chunky pick-like sound.... short of it being a dead string.,.. you should be able to work it with your playing hand to get the thump you want.....

if as you say it's only the E string and you have replaced it a few times with the same results i would look at setup as the culprit.... adjust your action or pickup height....

just curious, do you experience the same lack of "thump" playing through various different amps as well? (to negate it being the bass?)

Yes, iot happens on any amp. The volume of the E string fades out as I play lower than the 7th fret. I think a pickup height adjustment will help., I will try that.

This only sounds this way when I play with a group or a recording, the E string just vanishes amidst all the sound. I will raise the pup height and see if that works.

Thanks everyone for all your help and ideas!

When you say "no punch," are you complaining about the volume or the tone?
Flats can have a dull tone.
