Went shopping today for basses. I currently have two Squier P-basses. I'm looking to upgrade. I tried a Rickenbacker 4003 & a Gibson Thunderbird (studio), but both just sent me back to the P-bass rack. So, it would seem that I'm in the market for an ACTUAL P-bass; not just a Squier. I just want to confirm where the models I'm looking into are made (just 'cause it says American, sometimes the world doesn't mean it).

Where are these 3 made:
1) American Deluxe Precision Bass
2) American Standard Precision Bass
3) Standard Precision Bass

1 & 2 are facing-off in my brain. Which is better, the Deluxe Split-Coil Precision Bass® Pickup, or the American Standard Precision Bass® Alnico V Split Single-Coil Pickup. The answer could change my decision. edit:(When I say better, I guess I mean what are the main differences?)

Thank-you for your time.

actually i'm pretty sure in this case it does... if it says "American" then that denotes MIA...

if you look up an instrument on the website you can print the "tech sheet" for it and it will give you all info about it including build country....

Thanks kgerry. I'm new to the site, and still haven't quite figured out the layout yet. If I go to http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0194072721 it only gives me three options Overview, Specs, and Artists, I don't see one for the tech sheet.

So then I went to Support and then Technical Specs, and the model isn't listed when I search for it.

Am I looking in the wrong places?

Hi. Hope this helps.

Where are these 3 made:
1) American Deluxe Precision Bass : America : active bass
2) American Standard Precision Bass : America : passive
3) Standard Precision Bass : Mexico : passive
4) P Bass Deluxe Special: Mexico : active
5) Standard P bass from the 80's: Japan: passive (good luck on finding these).

do you want an active or a passive bass?
what style(s) of music do you play?
for example, if you play slap/funk style of music, I would recommend the Jazz bass over the Precision.
if you play punk, alt rock, etc. a Standard Precision would sound real nice. Some people prefer the American models, but I have the Mexican made and it works for me.
if you plan on eventually upgrading your Standard P bass, I would recommend just saving money and getting the American model.

Best of luck with your decision.

The American Deluxe is both active and passive since March 23, 2010.

My decision is honing in. The fact that the Deluxe has that switch in it for passive/active makes my decision easier, 'cause if I'm not enjoying the active life, one flick of the switch and I'm back to my comfy passive world.

I'm not a slapper, but I'm sure active pickups have more uses than just that kamakhoazi; at least I would hope. :?:

Also, thank-you for confirming the countries of origin. I've already got a Korean & a Chinese bass, so going with a Mexican one isn't what I want, so that crosses the P-bass deluxe of my list.

Kamakhoazi is right.
Choose the classic Fender tone and get a passive P.

Wise choice! What color?

I think the American Deluxe hardware, wood selection and finishes are better than on the American Standard. So if you can afford it, go for the American Deluxe.

I think where people question Made in USA is on the old California Series and today's Highway One's. Everything about those two series is done in the USA except the finishing which is done in Mexico and then the necks and bodies are shipped back to Corona for assembly, wiring and set up. Still I think some of the hardware and electronics are not up to the quality of the American Standard.

Be sure and let everyone know what you think once it arrives and post some photos! As the saying goes around here, no photo = no bass.

3 months and waiting...3 months doesn't sound like a long time, but man I can't wait to play it.

To answer your colour question, it's the black on black one. http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0194072706

I hope it doesn't take too much longer to get to my Fender dealer. :|

Black on black's beautiful! I had an all-black '77 Strat at one time - I still miss that guitar :(

I'm surprised that Fender don't offer a black-on-black American Standard with maple neck - it's such a classic P-Bass colour scheme - JJ Burnel, Roger Waters et al.! (Yes, I know about the Roger Waters sig., but that, AFAIK, is basically a re-worked Mexican Standard.

Hi, on monday 10 january, i ordered a new p-bass american deluxe, wine red with rosewood fingerboard, i choose it instead of the american standard for 2 reason, 1- jazz pickup at the bridge, 2-active/passive circuitry, it will be there in 4-6 weeks.

ampeg svt-2pro
ampeg svt810
1975 rickenbacker 4001 white
2003 bc rich eagle usa necktrough (custom shop) black
