Today I got my new 2011 MIM P Bass and it looks and sounds great! Candy apple red with maple neck. The fretwork is perfect and it has a great set up so I'm good to go. I have played and owned Rics, Hofners, Kramers, Fenders and many others but asked my wife tonight to make sure this beauty is the bass I get buried with! At the age of 61 and having paid some serious dues over the years, I think this bass is my favorite of all!

To each is their own,I am a purist myself and owned a few MexicanT basses and my first Fender was a 1996 jazz MIM with the one piece pickgaurd(w/out the chrome plate for the knobs and output jack)and it was the bass that forced me to learn to be a bass tech.
This hunk of junk was terrible, neck had more waves than Hawaii and more deadspots than I could count,my bass teacher felt bad setting my neck so much he taught me how to shim a neck and do a set-up not because he felt bad charging me but got tired of seeing my bass.
After not playing for a few years I put a down payment on a MIM p-bass,18 yrs old greta neck ETC...,did'nt want a mex but could'nt afford an American,I went to pay off my MIM and just put on the shelf was a American made p-bass,used 1 time and only 100.00$ more,I went over took the hang tag off and thanked the lord right there in the store, well unknowingly a friend of mine bought the MIM I passed on(he trusted me exp and went and bought the bass that night not known to me)well 2 weeks later he's at my door 8.00am with the bass, the truss rod broke while playing out,I believe he did'nt adjust it,it was dead on when I seen it last and had the same flats on it,fate or....?
So my giving MIM's another shot almost goosed me,I will pay the extra any day, nothing personal aside that fact they build them over there partially because of of the more"LIENEINT" ozone laws, basically allowing painting with chemicals that we frown on here due to pollutents are not enforced over there($$$$..??)of course the cheap labor but thats a topic best left for another time

Another figure to toss into the mix is the store in question the bass was bought,I worked for a National music store chain and was very interested in why all the Fenders other than the US models(some of them actually)most of them seemed to be of poor quality, even the Japanese stuff the sold seemed questionable, before I go on I will say I before I worked there and during the time I worked there I bought all my Fenders there but after I left did I buy not one single new bass(used yes) from them.
My job besides selling was to take stock out and put it out on the floor and seeing I was also a bass tech I stayed in the bass sept only to venture out in to guitar section to assist in sales on a busy day,and I began to see a patteren, all the Fender basses I un-packed were all poorly set-up,the necks BADLY bowed and neck pockets unusually sloppy along with hardware loose or poorly fitted along with some of the worst fret tangs poking out I ever seen, and this was not limited to the imports models(Indo,Mim & yes MiJ)even the American mades were coming in poorly set-up(I hesitate to even say set-up)some basses were so bad the strings were laying on the fretboard.
I was the customer that would play every model in the store to find the one I wanted and I left there at times having played 15 plus basses,un-able to find one that I would expect to be a good bass after it was given a good once over from me at home,3 times I had to return basses because the necks were deemed un-adjustable/un-fixable by a lic. by Fender repairman,1 time as an employee I had to have my store manager call Fender cust service, and only after us calling our stores sales rep did we get something done about the lack of respect we recieved from C.S. in our attempt to get a replacement neck for warped MiJ artist jazz bass neck.
It was a slap in the face,I was always a Fender bass player, always pushed their stuff and they crapped on me as a cust and a retailer,So I did some investigation with my Buddy who's been affiliated with them for 20 years did we find out that this particular chain purposely bought factory 2nds,refurbished,NO-SET-UP and "Blemed" basses(not guitars just...)they got them at a cut rate price and the store DID-NOT sell them as or advertise them to be 2nds AT THE LOWERED PRICE.
Evedentually the stores sales rep and store manager were in cahoots, and never said anything when he came to the store his 6 times a year and did'nt notice the prices were never lowered,or the basses were'nt being billed as what they really were, now the store is owned by a larger con-glomerate and have better products, just way more money is charged.
So the MIM's i saw were'nt the best, the 2 I owned were'nt either, but if you keep looking you just may find the "needle in the haystack" pssst...(guitar center)

I agree with the "needle in the haystack" theory. I found a "needle" with my FSR Precision, I did change the pickups recently. The fit and finish are perfect, frets are great, can't feel any edge whatsoever. My MIM Jazz isn't as good as my Precision but it's a great bass. Tone is awesome and the neck is sweet.

I made accusations in earlier posts about certain retailers stocking seconds and re-furbished instruments. With some of the junk I've seen and played, there could be no doubt.

I'm a Fender snob, always was. There will be no other bass in my collection but them.

Unless I choose to build a project bass, which would be completely Fender inspired, I fully and completely agree...I'm a Fender guy, all the way!

But...but Ox, you have a Squier in your collection

Absolutely nothing wrong with MiM P-Basses. My Standard P is gorgeous and sounded great. Changed the pickup cos I wanted to, but even though it still feels great and sound even better now.
