Just stopping by to say I love my new MIM P bass! I know some purist would think these are toy instruments and only consider the USA Pbass the only true P Bass. I guess I got lucky because my 2010 model is extremely well built. It plays like a dream and sounds fantastic. I play finger style, slap and occasionally use a pick and I think the varied tones are great. This is not a "one sound" bass. Tone also depends on other factors such as your playing techniques, and of course your amp and cabs configuration. If you need a more complex electonic set up for more tone variations, by all means get something else, but I'm simply saying in my humble opinion that the MIM P bass, in all it's simplicity, is still an awesome instrument.

So anyways, for those who are on the fence about buying a MIM P Bass, my personal recomendation is do it! If you can afford the USA model, all the better, but Fender seem to have stepped up their game and these newer 2010 MIM models do deliver the goods. Thank you Fender!

Fender MIM basses in general came into their own over the past decade. I have a friend who bought a 2006 sunburst Standard Precision and I've got a standing offer to buy it from him but he isn't likely to sell it. It is really nice and needs nothing. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I did a set up with Thomastik-Infeld PowerBass EB344 strings on it and that thing is a killer.

Seems I heard something about them going to basswood for the bodies. Don't know if that is true or not. Checked specs on the product pages and doesn't specify what wood is used for the bodies. I know it used to say alder.

Mine is a clear coat '07 Fender Special Run with an ash body, rosewood neck and a tortise shell pickguard. I won't part with it, I'll probably buy more basses in the years to come but this one will always be around.

Yes, I wandered in one day, saw it, kicked myself for not buying it on the spot, went back three days later and it was still there. I never even played it, love at first sight.

It was the same one because I remembered the serial number, Ive got a weird thing about numbers, some are very easy for me to memorize.

the MIM Classic Series are great! My 50s P screams MIJ build level...and the PU is just great!

Although the Road Worns aren't my cup of tea finish wise, they are EXCELLENT basses for money...real nice MIMs

The MIM Guitars are great too. The Classic Player series are killer....I keep hoping for a Classic Player 60s P in Sea Foam or Surf Green!!! (i know never going to happen.... ;) )

I own a MIM P bass, Tele & Strat & except for the finish (poly/nitro, not quality) the Mexican builds are every bit as nice as new US standard runs were in the early to mid 70's when I was a kid. The woods, playability & hardware/pickups are virtually the same with one exception... the new Mexican guitars (not basses) come with better tuning machines than most 70's Standard models.

I have a 2001 MIM Standard P as well as my newest, a 2010 Am. Std. P-Bass(maple). If you get a good one, the MIM basses are nearly comparable to the USA as far as playability. The neck radius and profile is identical. The MIM is a good candidate for mods, mine is a burst with a tort. guard, CTS pots & orange caps, and a '62 RI p-up. I have both basses strung with flats(D'Addario Chromes) and both sound wonderful.

I bought a 1998 MIM Fender Precision bass from a local guy and have been playing it ever since. Everything except the pick guard, volume and tone knobs, and obviously strings is stock and it has never let me down. It plays and sounds as good as when I bought it over 10 years ago. I know MIM's get a bad wrap, however I always find myself coming back to my '98 MIM even after playing MIA's and other basses. Perhaps it is the fact it was my first bass

I own two at the moment - both model year 2008. I tested them against a couple American Standard basses at GCA and could not tell any sound or structural differences. After all, the components are "essentially" the same in both. Fender supplies most of the components to the Encenada assembly plant.

I hate to say it, but some critics of the MIM Fender equipment may be biased against ANYTHING from Mexico, because of 'political' issues. However when it comes to The MIM Fenders being a quality item and durable, I have found that they are every bit as playable and long lasting as the American Standards. Since 1963, I have owed many of each variety and have found no issues with either.

I would consider a MIM. I have a MIM Strat that is an excellent guitar, and I have 3 other basses besides my MIA Jazz, two Indonesian Squiers and a Chinese SX, and the quality on those is so nice, I can no longer judge an instrument's quality solely on where it was made.
