What are the differences between the two basses, beside lenght? I was cruising the pawn shops yesterday and seen one that I might buy for a back up.

I don't think there are other than the size. My Urge (Stu Hamm) was short scale and it was an awesome bass to play with. The Urge II is a 34" scale bass tho, and that is also a very nice bass.

I have a hofner. They sound about the same. I have seen a Gretch bass.
But I have used mostly Fenders.

Stanley Clarke's signature Alembic is a short scale, Jack Bruce's Gibson he used with Cream was also a short scale, some reckon it gives a funkier sound and it's great for string bending too (less string tension) as JB would testify to, just listen to some of his earlier solo's. 8)
