Carol Kaye has ans amazing career that is still going on. When Motown moved to L.A. she was part of a gang of studio musicians called "The Wrecking Crew", it wasn't just Motown she played for. Google her, it's interesting.

.......well I hope that we're about more than JUST making money.....or else I've been working at the wrong place for 30 years!!!

Mr.Edwards, good to see you dropping by, posting and sharing.

brotherdave, good stuff!...and as you so eloquently pointed out, I think we do a pretty job of making people aware of some of the unsung heros in music.
I attended the ceremony for the well-deserved and welcomed induction of James Jamerson into the Fender Hall of Fame, http://www.fender.com/features/hof/?year=2009
Not only was THAT an emotional and cool day, but getting to see Bob Babbitt talk AND play was .....awesome and inspiring.
At any rate, interesting discussions!

Best regards,
rob

Even if nobody else here knows, I know what FMIC has done regarding the FUNK MACHINE.

I appreciate FMIC buzzing in because I was beating a dead mule with a limp crop.

If ANYONE ever has any kind of lead on the FUNK MACHINE. PLEASE, do what is right.

Personally, I'd like to think it was burned in some ritual. It is just TOO HOT.

To whoever took it, I hope it was worth it.

But really, it wasn't.

I do think that like Jaco's bass, it is out there.

Maybe in a pawn shop, like Jaco's. One can dream can't one?

HOWEVER even if found, could ANYONE play it like JLJ?

Hell no.

Just like there will never be another Sinatra or Hendrix or SRV, there will never be another Jamerson.

Where is the Funk Machine? It is frankly in the heart of every bassist that ever heard it and that wanted to play like JLJ and would sell their SOUL to play that way.

That is where it is. In the mystic. Living in people's souls.

It is in the mystic beyond. Not a bad place to be, along with the Golden Fleece and The Arc of the Covenant. But still, I'd rejoyce if it was revealed. I really doubt it will happen but stranger things have happened.

If it is out there, I just hope it is found in my lifetime. It meant so much to me and to so many others. I was awed. We looked to JLJ for inspiration, and found him without question or doubt, the most worthy player of them all. There is NO question about that.

I'm not into playing a lot of notes. I'm not into playing very busy lines. I'm into playing what I think is the RIGHT basslines. Sometimes IT IS LEAD.
Often it is not.

Bass is a mysterious and WONDROUS thing. It can lead. It can follow. It can also denote EVERYTHING whether melody or countermelody. NOBODY ever understood that better than JLJ.

I know I will NEVER have that CLARITY of vision.

I have DESPERATELY tried, but JLJ had a knack, a gift, an UNDERSTANDING of music and of people and of pain and of what it took to fill the pain that the rest of us WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND. That is the sum of his work. FILLING the pain with joy. OH Brother, he filled it, WITH FUN.

The joy of bass is FUN. Kids, remember that. It is supposed to be FUN. It is SUPPOSED to be fun. I forgot that lots of the time, but when I hear JLJ play, all I think about is FUN.

I wanted to post for your entertainment what I consider one of the best performances of the 20th century on electric bass. James Jamerson playing on the FOUR TOPS "Bernadette." Decided it would be better to promote it than share it, so went back and edited this post. So, get a copy of the book "Standing In The Shadows of Motown." It includes the music on CD. These JLJ heavy mixes are available ONLY because of Dr. Licks. So compare the Dr. Licks remix to the single. Might help you on your way. Lord knows ALL OF US need constant inspiration and edumcatation.

Hey BrotherDave. I found another link for the Jamerson isolated "Bernadette" on the internet. If you changed your post because it would take away revenue from the "Shadows in Motown" collection, then I won't post my source. Ethically we shouldn't post it because someone went to a lot of time, trouble and expense to make "Standing inThe Shadows of Motown". Educationally, we should. But the answer is, from our posts, bass players now know the clip exists and any "real" bass player will either comb the internet or buy the package. Later.

In response to Brother Dave, it would be amazing fot the Funk Mavhine to appear, it's probably sitting in a vault somewhere in Guitar Center's main office alongside Blackie.

It would be a shrine .

To Scott, over the years I've noticed a lot of guys here dedicated to being better bass players. When you get to know them, it's still about personal satisfaction.

Maybe they goof around but, they are serious about their ability.

One thing to keep in the back of our minds,

Let's keep the ants dancing.

To Oxfan: My first purpose for starting this thread was "Where Is King Jamerson's Throne On this Website". Now having got input from all of you about the Jamerson family situation, my direction has shifted to share some things I know that aren't well publicized like the hidden tracks of Jamerson and using a Trombone method book to better the bass skills. I'm not "a Jamerson" by no means, but I have learned things and talked to people. One time I was in Crystal Studios doing a session and on the break, upon going to the lobby, Jamerson and I saw each other and started talking. He started looking at my 62 Precision bass real intently and kinda seriously said to me, "Let me have your bass". Because he was and is the "God Of Bass", for a minute I almost said yes. A minute later, I came to my senses and realized I had bills to pay and jokingly said I couldn't. Everyone said Jamerson's bass was stolen as he lay dying but Jamerson acted like he had lost his bass then or maybe he wanted to add to his collection. Maybe his son knows the real details. Jamerson continued to talk for awhile and then split. But he gave me info which helped me and made me play better. So my purpose here is not to make fun of or demean any serious bass player. My delivery may be abrubt or super serious, but once you have met "The Man", and the bar he set is ingrained in your brain, it makes you real serious and try to help develop the next "Jamerson" and look for quality music. My studio days are over as far as doing three to four sessions a day, which the info from my younger bass friends such as "Ready Freddy", doesn't exist anymore. But thankfully, I did so many songs and movie dates, I still get paid. Tuesday night, the new series, "No Ordinary Family" used Peaches and Herbs hit "Shake Your Groove Thing". " It's Money Time" for the old guys again. And let's be honest.. some guys want to be performers only for the glory and the girls and some guys want to be bass players for the respect and glory of the instrument and respect for the players who have gone before them. To that latter group I am trying to export my help and knowledge. Thanks
Scott Edwards
