Hello. I am Scott Edwards, a studio bass player in Los Angeles who along with other older players, played on hundreds of hits worldwide, using a Precision Bass. Players like James Jamerson, Chuck Rainey, Bob Babbitt, Joe Osborne, Carol Kay, Tony Newton, Donald Duck Dunn, Jerrold Jemmont, David Hungate, etc. The hits these people played on, created the frenzy that made the Precision famous and desirable by future players. Hearing James Jamerson for the first time, made me have to get the same bass he played, a Fender Precision. You currently only mention bands and artists in bands. A lot of players don't know who these new bands or players are, and don't care because they can tell these band players are probably not that good, individually, but the world surely knows the hits created by studio bass players. Check out my website and see all the hits and songs I played on using a Fender Precision only, and I'm not alone. My site is scottedwardsmusic.com and click on Hits Played On. I hope this gives Fender some ideas. Thanks
Scott Edwards

First off, your assumption is wrong, those artists get the respect they deserve all the time on this website. Second, in my mind, it's not cool to come on this website and dis it just to promote your own.

Hello. If I was promoting myself, I wouldn't have mentioned the other bass players who played Fender basses. Also as far as promotion, we studio players are on the back of every album and we receive new use and reuse money when our songs are played so we don't need endorsements or basses. We've got too many already. This post was to say Fender has the richest legitimate production history to totally ignore the most obvious result of their superior engineering. Thanks

Scott, it kind of came off that way. Just the title alone made it came off that way. I'm not a moderator, so I don't care either way.

Well, Scott, regardless of whether or not you are promoting yourself and your website, we'll just let that go. But I still say you are way wrong about Fender not giving the players you mentioned any credit. If anything, it's the exact opposite. I'm constantly seeing Fender promoting themelves mentioning these folks as well as the newer players with the idea that Fender has been a favorite of studio bassists along with the more famous musician's in popular bands. In other words it's to their benefit to say "See, all these professional players, famous or not, pick Fenders as a rule becasue they are experienced and knowquality when they play it." I see it all the time.

First, congrats on the great recording legacy. Some great hits, for sure.

Second, on first read, your post did come off as angry. Also, I'm not exactly sure what it is you desire from Fender.

For example, here is Babbitt's page: http://www.fender.com/artists/artist.php?id=100

I should note that both Duck Dunn and Jamerson has been discussed extensively here by myself and others.

Also, both Dunn and Osborne have signature basses from other companies, so I'm not sure how much Fender is interested in promoting artists when the artist gets an endorsement from another company.

Having said that, I do agree with your general sentiment that many of the studio musicians from the golden days of radio have gone unrecognized. I was unaware of your name until your post.

From a business perspective, of course Fender has an incentive to market using the current and rising stars of the moment. But they should never forget their important past, if that's what I hear you saying.

I think it would be interesting for Fender to pull together a web site cataloguing all the hits generated by its basses. It would be an impressive list, indeed.

Congrats again on your body of work,

-Tim

Upon coming to this forum yesterday 9/20/10 for the first time, not knowinging it existed, I was amazed not to see, on the site, any mention of the bass players who made us want to play bass and in particular, Fender basses. Most of the songs starting around 1956 or so, were featuring Fender electric basses. This continued until 1967 or so when competing companies were beginning. But James Jamerson, Carol Kaye and Chuck Rainey were the ones we bass players heard and all of three were using Fender basses. They might have migrated because of various reasons(being ignored by Fender maybe) but their body of work was still historic and undeniable. My point is Fender could still have bragging rights. To me, not mention in some form, the three giants of Electric bass playing on a constant page on the website or something, seems sad. And as far as new bands, I would say many of them don't know many of the licks they play or try to play, came from some studio person. The only reason I used myself was my discography was available while i was writing. Those same sites have the other players also. You take my contribution out of the mix, just mention the big three(Jamerson, Kaye and Rainey) on some page of the Fender site. Later. Scott

Law Dog got my point exactly. A page showing what songs were played using Fender's creations would be a selling point for Fender. Thanks Law Dog. I ssume you are a lawyer. Congratulations. Later.

Yes, I am a lawyer (to fund my music habit) :)

I've never seen any indication that Fender reads the forum, but this is a good start.

I'd be interested to hear you share some stories about sessions you were on. Not cheesy tabloid stuff, but the challenges and equipment you used. I'm sure many would be interested here, as well. You were blessed to play in a great era, would love the hear about your contributions.

Hello friends. I have one last question for this site. In the artist/band section of Fender, why can I punch the "B" button and get Bob Babbitt's life and picture to download(Bob is my friend and we talk every few months or so, so this is nothing against Bob) and if I hit the "J", nothing comes up about James Jamerson? My friend "Bob" was under Jamerson in the Motown structure. Any takers?

Hello. Pasted below is an old Stevie Wonder song with Jamerson playing on you-tube. All of you egotistical young players, see if you can begin to play along with Jamerson or even keep up. Good Luck -

Hello Mr. Edwards. While Fender's current marketing may ignore the "big three" and other players you mentioned, the forum contributors certainly do not. If you do a search on any of those players in the forum HUNDREDS of references are sure to come up. Many made by yours truly. Jamerson, Kaye & Dunn are the big three as far as I am concerned. Carol Kaye is the best instructor on the planet, bar none. She bailed to Ibanez so long ago she missed her turn and additionally shot herself in the foot over the disputed Motown tracks not just with Fender but with the R&R Hall of Fame which is where she truly should be.

Prior to him jumping ship to Lakland, Fender did market a "DUCK DUNN" signature P-bass years ago. It was a candy apple red Japanese instrument sold worldwide.

Fender UK did market a very limited edition "JAMES JAMERSON" signature P-bass sold only in UK and while I've never actually seen one personally I have been assured they really do exist. They are of course sunburst. There is always talk of a Jamerson signature USA, however it never has happened. The "62 Reissue" is as close as we are likely to get, perhaps at least until the FUNK MACHINE is recovered.

Fender has been at the forefront in attempting to recover James Jamerson's stolen FUNK MACHINE used on Motown 62 and up. Fender made a standing offer years back to exchange a brand new USA 62 RI P-Bass for the Funk Machine NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Therefore please do NOT say Fender ignores the Jamerson legacy.

Far from ignoring these contributors, Fender honored them and enriched them, and in Jamerson's case enriched his estate.

I respect what you have thus far accomplished. Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" has always been a personal favorite song of mine. I hope that list on your site is not the end of it and you continue your productive and successful career in LA.

Having received information from various members of the forum with insight on both Fender and Jamerson, it may be that Fender is maybe doing all they can do to present Jamerson’ s life and career. If the reasons told to me are accurate, it is a sad point in one of the world’s most successful combination of man and machine. Maybe these barriers will be negated in the future so Jamerson’s genius can be advertised as only a big corporation such as Fender can do. If my original thoughts that Fender had thrown Jamerson to the wind were correct, I was prepared to contact the L.A. media and publicly burn my 59, 62, 64 and 66, original P-basses(just kidding, of course). So thanks again everyone and on items that I am knowledge about, I will contribute to this site. Later.

Scott, my 16 year-old daughter is a huge Jamerson fan. His music lives on. She can also do a Duck Dunn line like nobody's business in my band. If you're interested in passing your insight along to the younger generation, I can assure you she is all ears.

Thanks again for stopping by here.
