I payed 650 US for an 87 Japanese P. I thought it was a good price. Basswood or alder body? Alder will cost a bit more, generally. My electronics were shot as well; I like the Seymour Duncan Antiquities as replacements.

I saw one recently for sale in NYC that was in nice shape and they wanted $750 for it. I a bought refinished one with HSC for $75, 10 years ago! Because you are in Ireland I have no idea what they are worth over there. All the ones I've played play and sound very similar to the 60s P-basses. Also be aware that most of them have pretty beefy necks.
