Hello everyone, well my question is... i almost buy a beautiful 50`s precision bass... made in japan in 1993 or 1994 year, but the serial number is in the bottom of the back of the neck near the body.... the text says... Made in japan serial number... P031072

Can anyone tell me if the bass is a genuine fender of japan?

I guess because if i remembered the serial numbers of fenders basses are in the top of the neck in front of the tuners or behind of them...

THANKS![/url]

That's where the serial number is on my CIJ '03 '51RI P.

And on my CIJ 51 RI P-Bass too. Some of the earlier Japanese Fenders had "Made In Japan" on the headstock. These were Nippon-Gakki made Fenders. Then the origin and serial was moved to the base of the neck.

The bass you are considering Rui89 was made at the Fuji-gen Plant in Matsumoto (for Fender Japan) in the 1993-1994 model year.

If there is any weakness in the CIJ Fender stuff it is the electronics. The wood and finishes and fretwork are great! I love Fender Japan necks. The hardware (some made by GOTOH) is OK and on par with the Fender MIM stuff (but CIJ hardware is often different than USA or MIM production and therefore sometimes not interchangeable at all. For example try and find aftermarket replacement tuners to fit a Fender Aerodyne bass. I've never found any. Also the pickguard for a CIJ 51 RI P or a STING P (which share the same hardware & electronics) will not fit on the MIM Mike Dirnt bass. Looks like it should, but it won't.

My opinion is which is better (MIM or CIJ) depends upon which category you are talking about. I do think the current MIM production has the edge in electronics and MIM basses are also easier to upgrade and maintain in the long run since more USA standardized parts will fit on them with no modifications required. Fender Japan has the edge in tonewoods, necks, finishes and fit. On the downside Japanese made Fender basses cost more than comparable MIM Fenders due to the Yen versus US Dollar exchange rate. The CIJ 51 RI P-Bass is about the same price here in the USA as the Highway One P-Bass. The CIJ's are getting so expensive here that if you do a few upgrades, like high-end bridge and custom pickup replacement, you'll have so much invested you could have bought a USA Standard in the first place.
