I have a question for the Forum: I am new to Bass playing and want to buy either a 51 P-Bass Reissue or an American P-Bass. I currently play a Jazz Bass with Flatwound strings and want to make a jump to the P-Bass camp... I would appreciate some opinions before I make my purchase. Thanks.

If you're new to bass playing I'd say hold your horses and learn to play competently before expanding your guitar collection. Just my opinion. When I was a beginner I played a crappy little p bass copy for a year, got good at it then bought a fender. 2 years later here I am and only now considering buying a second bass (the crappy p bass clone doesn't count, wasn't mine!)

If you don't like playing the jazz bass though I guess it'd make sense, in which case I'm a fan of the bog standard (-ahem- haha) american series instruments. The 51 reissues are gorgeous though.

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it very much. Yeah, I want to buy a better bass (I know it won't make me a better player, but I want to have a real P-Bass). Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat, I'd love a Highway one p bass after having played one in store the other day, what a beast! I always thought the p bass neck was too big for me but really it isn't. I'll be getting a Squire VM fretless first though :)

But I still Love my jazz bass.

First off I wold recommend playing on the lesser bass as long as you can stand, because if you can play well on a poor playing instrument, you'll play even better on a good instrument. Anyway back to your original question. If you currently play a jazz bass the jump to a p-bass is going to take some adjustment regardless of which one you get. But I think the American P-bass will be easier to transition too, plus it has that p-bass sound you're probably looking for, the '51 has a different pickup. The p-bass has a wider neck than the jazz to begin with, but the American has a flatter profile than any of the '51s I've ever played. A couple other instruments to look into are also the Highway One P-bass, a MIM P-bass that plays really well (they do exist), or the Active P-Bass special (it has a p and j pickup and a Jazz bass neck). I hope my ramblings helped
