I just got a Classic Series 50s P bass in Fiesta Red and its awesome. Which pickup does the guitar have? is it a standard series pickup? i also heard that it is a handwound pickup, which means it can't be a standard series pick up.

Congrats on your new bass. Not sure as to the pick-up other than the info from the Fender website. "1 Precision Bass Split Single-Coil Pickup (Mid)"

Hi P-Bass fans... I just bought a Classic Series 50's P-Bass as well and would also like to know more about the pickups installed. Can anyone at Fender please elaborate on the stock pickups? Are they the same as the Standard MIM P-Bass pups? Thanks!

I believe they just use the stock MIM pickups in these. Since they changed the pickups in the standard MIM line last year, they may not be exactly the same pickups as the current standard basses, but I imagine even if they're not the same model they're pretty similar.

Essentially, they are not vintage style pickups. 60's era P-bass pickups were aggressive and had a ton of high mids, and the 57 pickup was very bassy and warm. The modern standard pickups tend to be very low mid heavy.

I remember some talk on this on other forums, I don't believe the Classic '50s P has the same pups as a
Standard P.
Here's what I found at Fender:

Standard P : 1 Standard Precision Bass Split Single-Coil Pickup (Mid)

Classic '50s P : 1 Precision Bass Split Single-Coil Pickup (Mid)

PS ..... I love my 2006 '50s P.

Yeah, as said above these are still MIM instruments so naturally Fender goes and puts the regular MIM Standard Fender stock P-bass pickups the main differences between this bass and standard p is how it has the vintage look.

So the 57 Am Vintage has the true 50's pups? There is also a difference in the body finish between the classic and Am Vintage. So then how close to authentic is the classic series compared to the Am Vintage? I hear the 57 Am Vintage is a close as you can get to a real vintage 50's P bass.

As it happens, I own both. I replaced the standard pickup on the Classic '50s with a Basslines Quarter Pound, and it killed with TI Jazz Flats. I just got the AV '57, and it sounds more like the QP (it also has Jazz Flats -- in fact, the same ones that were on the Classic, because a friend is buying it and wanted rounds). I have read various speculations in the past as to the Classic pickup, but I don't know that anything was ever proven.

I -- and my band -- loved the Classic '50s, but I could never get used to the fiesta red. Naturally, the guy buying it wants it because of the color! To each his own. The band broke up, and I have not done live gigs with the '57, only recording, but it sounds great, like a Precision should.

The feel between the two is very similar (identical specs include the alder body -- I have the sunburst '57 -- the fingerboard radius, nut width, cap spec, aluminum pickguard, and reverse tuners) with the only visual difference (other than the flawless nitro finish vs glassy poly) being the "tugbar" on the treble side of the strings on the '57.

I love 'em both, but the '57 is the better bass, which makes the Classic '50s surplus to requirements.

I'm confused by that statement. :?:

The "tugbar" is the short piece attached to the pickguard at a slight angle to the strings on the treble side of the upper bout. The Classic '50s has the holes drilled for mounting it (and the pickup cover -- the pickguard is made of aluminum, and all holes are drilled before treatment so the anodization coats the inside of the holes); the AV '57 has the piece attached. Check out the picture http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0190115801 -- it's the oblong black object below the strings that ends near the neck pocket.

It was a feature of Fender basses from the beginning, and were placed so the player could pull against it with his fingers while plucking the strings with his thumb. Eventually, in the late 60s, Fender realized everyone was playing with their fingers, and moved the tugbar to the bass side. Even more eventually, it was dropped entirely. Players who want a "traditional" look will mount one (often with a pickup cover and bridge cover) to a modern bass.

To this day I can't figure out how to use one.

No no no lpdeluxe, I know what a tugbar is! :)

I didn't understand the comment.... something to the effect ..
"..... the only difference is the tugbar on the treble aide ..."

Are you comparing to a post- '74 P or ????

Oh, I get it.

What I originally meant, was, the AV '57 arrived with a tugbar mounted to the pickguard and the Classic '50s didn't.

Another minor thing is that the '57 comes with pickup and bridge covers (unmounted) while the Classic '50s doesn't.

I left them off mine, and wouldn't miss the tugbar if it were gone, but I like the look enough that I'll leave it on mine. It's the first bass on which I have changed only the strings (and added strap locks).

Ahhhhhh ..... got it!

Yeah, I added the covers and thumbrest to my '50s P (see above). I have taken the pup cover off though.
I like the look, but it gets in my way.

I like that black finish. I really wanted a white one, but my dealer told me Fender discontinued that color. I didn't think I'd like sunburst or black, so I ended up with the Ensenada take on fiesta red, which -- out the four -- I really disliked the most! Now I've got a 'burst '57, and it looks fine, as does your black one, and...and the white ones are starting to look wimpy. Oh well.

I had thought the pickup cover would interfere with my playing, so I left it off. And, with the idea in mind that holes can't be un-drilled, I left off the bridge cover as well. Maybe the next owner will decide differently, but, since I don't care about it, I'll leave that to him or her. Not that I'm planning to sell it, but I always go by the principle that we are merely the temporary custodians of our guitars and basses.
