So my main bass went down, and my backup is in the shop. So my uncle was kind enough to lend me his bass thats been sitting for quite a while. Its a P Bass Special, and he was curious to find more info on it, as am I.

The serial # is G 025576. I originally thought that would put it at an '82 Walnut, but for one its not Walnut, and two, the "O" appears to be a zero not an 'O'. But that would put it as a Strat from the info I looked up.

Anyway, I figured someone here would be able to shed some light on this. Here are some pics to help.

Stinky, I looked up your serial number on Fender's web site. Check the instruments made in Japan. Serial numbers beginning with G are there. Made in 87 or 88. Unfortunately, that's all the info that's available. Wish there were more because I'm interested in knowing more about my bass.

It says Made in USA on the headstock logo.

That is a 1982-1983 or early 1984 P-Bass special. The "G" designated gold hardware used on these super deluxe basses. Since the Strats with that serial are far more numerous the online daters like THE GUITAR DATER PROJECT ignore it and go with the more common Fender instrument with the same serial. After all it is the GUITAR Dater Project, not the BASS Dater Project.

The serial format for the Fender Bass in question is listed in the BROTHER DAVE"S PRINTABLE FENDER FIELD GUIDE as "1982-up" ("up" means until the demise of Fender Fullerton in 1984 when production moved to Japan.) These are very nice walnut bodies, but since walnut is denser they are heavier than alder or ash. Beautiful basses that had not only had unique tone wood, but also the top caliber hardware.

To download a totally free copy of my Fender Bass dating guide, visit the RESOURCES page in my forum signature below, then click on INSTRUMENT HISTORIC DATA. The FIELD GUIDE download is listed first on that page.

That's a 1982 Precision Special, custom color Sapphire Blue, and made in Fullerton, CA.

All 1982 Strats, Teles and basses could be ordered in the custom colors appearing on Page 41 of the 1982 catalog. I have one similar to it (maple fretboard, though), SN G024489. If your uncle would consider selling it please contact me.

Very nice bass!

trey le parc. I'd really appreciate a high-def scan of your 1982 color chart to post on my website. Go to brotherdave.com and click on the CONTACT button on the main menu and contact me. Thanks!

The serial format was used from '82 through Fullerton's closing in '84 and then carried over to earlier MIJ instruments.

Sapphire Blue is often called Sapphire Blue Transparent. Were there two different Sapphire Blue finishes?

Brotherdave,

I'll see what I can do to get you a pic of the color chart. Give me a couple days.

According to what little information I've been able to find Fender offered the "jewel series" of colors in 1982-- Emerald Green, Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue, all transparent finishes allowing the wood grain beneath the finish to be visible. I'm interested in Fender basses made in Fullerton between 1981-1983, so I can't speak with any authority of other versions of sapphire blue, or any other color for that matter.

I've used your guide in the past and found it to be pretty accurate. Thanks for providing this resource free of charge.

I have never seen an early 80's Precision Special with a natural headstock, unless it was one of the walnut ones.

A Custom Color Precision Special! Way cool.

I didn't know that Fender offered them. Wow . I learned something new today.
