I put one on my Stingray - I think this is a more useable position as I tried to locate it on a line where the pickup edge continues. I also sanded down the rest to be the same height as the pickup.

Leo Fender put the original "Finger Rest" on the treble side because he thought everyone would pluck with their thumb.

The reality is that the playing style evolved to more intricate fingerstyle playing using two or three fingers. So Fender moved the rest to the bass side to make the majority of players happy.

Many players in the 60's and 70's removed their bridge & pickup covers. Some also removed the bass side thumbrest saying it was in the way. So Fender decided to let people add them if they wanted them. First they included the parts with the case candy, but later stopped when few were installing them. Now of course everyone wants those covers and rests for a vintage look.
