I recently got a new American Standard P-Bass with great sounding strings from the factory. The strings had a silver/grey wrap around the pegs and the E string round wound wind stops just before the bridge. No one seems to know where these strings came from. Fender tells me what they think they were but the strings they want to sell me aren't the same at all. Anyone have a clue who makes these strings. They are on every American Standard in the stores here in LA, they're even in the photos on Fender's website.

Are they not what comes stock on all Fenders, Fender Super Bass 8250M NPS (.045, .065, .085, .110TW Gauges)?
Any new Fender I have purchased had these on there. With the silver/grey wrapping.

No, they're not the same strings. Nothing that Fender sells in the store have a silver/grey wrap or an E string with that particular style.

They may just be a factory string they got a good price on.

In this statement, you describe the Super Bass 8250's.

Fender Super Bass 8250's have a silver/grey wrap only at the peg end and a tapered E string.
Note, the new Fender Super Bass 8250 strings have no silk wrapping. That may be where the confusion comes from.

I've considered that but don't you think it's weird that those strings are featured in the on-line catalogue photos? I've been playing bass for 41 years and believe it or not, these strings sound great!! Otherwise, I really wouldn't give a $@!& about finding out what they are. Guess I'll be looking into some other strings. Any of you young turks out there have recommendations for a through the body P-Bass.

I recall there being an extensive thread over on TalkBass that included comments from the gentleman in charge of the Fender string makeover. After reading that the new flatwounds sound a little more 'zingy' like Chromes, I went and bought the last old package in town :)
