I have an electrical buzz coming out of my Am Deluxe P, wasn't there before. checked the wiring, shielded the interior, everything seems to check out OK, but the buzz is still there making the bass unplayable unless I turn the treble way down. I use Fender tapewounds, and if I touch the bridge or the metal knobs the buzz is much reduced. My HWY 1 P in the same setup is dead quiet, so it is not the amp or location or cable. Anyone have any good suggestions? At this point, I am thinking of replacing the preamp in the bass and see if that helps...

I would double check your shielding, and make sure your ground wire is stuck under the bridge tight by giving it a light tug. I had this same issue when I put 1/4 lbs in my p bass, mine was shielding. Although I have never worked with a pre-amp in the circuit so I don't know if that could cause it. Best of luck.

If you can touch the bridge or knobs and the buzz goes away, that usually indicates a loose ground connection. Have you checked with a multi-meter?

I've had a bridge wire come loose from under the bridge, I recently had to remove a P-bass bridge and re-seat the wire - it had disappeared into the wood and paint.

One possibility is that there is oxidation or contamination in the cable jack on your bass and the cable is not fully picking up "guitar ground" when the cable is plugged in. Simply take a "Q-TIP" dipped in rubbing alcohol from your local pharmacy and scrub the inside of the jack opening as well as the outside of the cable plug.

You can also add an additional length of ground wire under the footprint of the bridge. That small stub of ground wire from the factory may not be contacting the underside of the bridge properly. If you remove the bridge, do so carefully after relaxing the string tension. Clean the bottom of the bridge plate with rubbing alcohol as well. You can CAREFULLY solder a 3 inch piece of stranded 32 gauge bare wire to the existing ground wire stub and 'snake' it around under the bridge plate for a more uniform contact.

thanks, Luke, I basically redid the whole of the cavities with copper foil and worked on some of the ground wires, now there is almost no buzzing, only when I touch the poles of the pups...
