I am in the process of customizing my 2004 Standard P and I found a website that sells fretboard dots. Is it possible to change the inlays on the neck? If so, is this something I can attempt, or should I leave it to a pro? Are they 6mm or 1/4" dots? And since you might have answered all 3, is changing a string tree a DIY or pro job as well. Thanks in advance.

Changing a string tree should not be that big of deal, unscrew and remove the old one, and screw in the new one.

But changing fretboard markers/inlays should only be done by a pro, if it can be done at all.

I guess he wants to put abalone dots on the fretboard, though I'm not certain.

Not to be more simplistic then I am, but what part are you guys calling a string tree?

The little doohickey behind the nut that holds (usually) two strings down to get a better breakover angle on the nut. It's screwed into the peghead.

Yup. On old Teles, it actually looks like a tree, but on my P-bass, it looks more like a string washer. :)
