Hi All.

I've recently become the owner of a nice 1976 model with the natural finish, which has aged somewhat. Everything on the bass appears to be original (thumb rest, pickup cover, ashtray, knobs, etc.), although I haven't dated the pots. My question is this: The pickguard appears to be a 4 ply with w-b-w-brown, with brown being the top color. Could this be a factory pickguard? I haven't seen one in brown, and I'm curious as to whether it could have aged to this color or is in fact a replacement. I love the instrument. What a treat.

Thanks all!

Welcome!

Glad to hear you've bonded with your instrument.

Unfortunately, your pickguard is an aftermarket job. Even with aging, the closest some OEM white pickguards turn is a mild hint of yellow.

Thanks for the welcome!

After a little investigation last weekend, it looks from the neck stamp that the neck was made in 72 and the pots are from 73. The serial number of the neck plate definitely makes it a '76, though.

In looking at the pickguard, it looks like the top of it was painted brown, and it's actually a 3 ply white guard - w/b/w. There's a little bit of overspray on the underside of the guard, and a significant rectangular ridge in the brown surface where the thumbrest is mounted.

'72 to '76 seems a long time for a neck to sit in stock before being matched to a body, but it is possible. Maybe it doesn't matter that much, as you'll likely never know if the neck was switched out at some point or if it's all original. Keep in mind that there's some wiggle in the neck plate numbers (and uncertainty in the ranges Fender posted), so it could be a '75 body too...

The original pickguard was likely black. Not sure if they were b/w/b or four-ply. I have a '76 P-bass but the PG is not original.
