I couldn't find that Hollywood Bowl shot but I found these ones instead that are just as good. The top picture shows the Beach Boys live on the TAMI Show on October 28th, 1964. In the background there's Al playing Carl's Jaguar, Mike, Carl with his new Rickenbacker 360/12 O.S. and Brian in front with his Olympic White Precision Bass. The bottom picture shows a close-up of Brian's bass where you can see the controls more clearly and you were right - the shaft didn't break off! He must have just lost one of the knobs somewhere, but it's interesting to note that when Brian had the bass he had the knob on the tone pot but when he passed the bass on to Bruce Johnston, he swapped it over to the volume pot!

I have it on GOOD authority that Brian ALSO had a single coil P-Bass for a while in the early days. It was Sunburst.

Yeah he played bass on some stuff VERY early on, but really it wasn't him most of the time and he didn't even do live bass stuff at all after the very early days. I MUST find out more about that old S.C. P-Bass he had and WHY he dumped it.

Might never know what happened to it though....but..."Wouldn't It Be Nice?"

Brian claims that the white P-Bass was the first bass he ever owned but he did indeed also have a sunburst P-Bass (either a '61 or '62). According to a few accounts Murry Wilson purchased this bass, along with a sunburst Stratocaster, for the start of the Surfin' Safari sessions in late summer 1962.

Maybe Brian just never felt as if he really owned this bass because he wasn't the one who actually paid for it, and that's why he always says that the white Precision Bass was the first bass he ever owned. I have no idea what happened to the '61/'62 sunburst, but he was still playing at the end of 1963.

Here he is with the sunburst P-Bass at the Hollywood Bowl on November 1, 1963:

By the time the "Surfside 64" Australian Tour started in January 1964 the sunburst P-Bass was out and his new white '63 P-Bass was in, so he must have made the swap during the 1963 holiday season.

Here he is with his new P-Bass in early 1964:

That seems to make sense. I have never looked and was surprised that there wasn't a 60's model in the Road Worn P-basses. I assumed Fender at least would have had a rosewood fingerboard alternative.
