I think that color is called vintage white. Sort of a yellow cream.

Yes I meant Olympic White, like the one Brian Wilson used in the early days.

However the one used on many of the hit Beach Boy recordings was Carol Kaye's Sunburst P-Bass. Odd that Brian, as good a bassist as he was back then and as good a keyboardist as he is today, brought in someone else to play bass on practically all the Beach Boy projects he produced. Lack of confidence maybe?

He played keys some of the time on the live "Smile" project a couple of years back which was his personal triumph that had collapsed in the 60's unfinished.

Thank God for Van Dyke Parks who helped him piece it back together as it was probably one of the greatest unfinished works in pop music history. Mr. Parks is another unsung Pop hero of mine. Mr. Wilson had Bob Lizik (another The Wrecking Crew bassist) come in to play bass for the "SMILE" project. Wise choice as he and his beret captured the total feel of the 60's. Not playing bass makes sense as Brian was the frontman and was too busy to carry the low-end, which is pretty busy on some of the pieces. I noticed at the performance I attended Brian didn't play at all much of the time and just needed the keyboards around him. When they all put on the fireman's helmets for "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" it was truly a moment I will never in my life forget. I had heard that this was the song that crushed the project way back when. I was dying to hear it.

Brian Wilson is a GENIUS. He goes largely unrecognized for his creativity. Thanks for bringing him up.

For those of you who do not know about the "SMILE" project, this was in production with several amazing hits coming out of it like "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes And Villains" before the project was finished. "Good Vibrations" just may be the greatest pop vocal piece ever. Well it is between that and a couple of recordings by the Carpenters and the Mamas and Papas.

Anyway, "SMILE" got shelved for numerous reasons. I'm just glad it got finished. It really bothered me for nearly 40 years that the hit songs from "SMILE" got shifted to another project and we never got to find out what "SMILE" was was about. I applaud Brian Wilson for having the guts to take it out live on tour and show everyone how good it really was.

I know that Brian only really played on the early albums but I just love the look of that bass. If you look closely you can see that the volume control is broken off. In close up pictures you can also see some big dings on the bottom edge underneath it. It must have taken a good hit at some point! The broken knob is a little easier to see in this picture of Bruce Johnston holding the same bass. For all their money I guess they still couldn't afford to buy a new one or even have it fixed for the new bass player!

Actually that was the tone control which makes it the first Mark Hoppus edition perhaps?

Bwahahaha!!! You are correct, sir.

God Only Knows is one of the best songs of all time, and this is coming from a blues player.

I think they would sell a ton of those Oly White Brian Wilson basses, maybe include the tone knob in the case??? ;)

That is a GREAT idea! I'd want to buy a Brian Wilson Artist Series P-Bass, so long as it was a USA or MIM and the tone control was intact.

That's weird because doesn't it look like it's the volume control that's broken off in the Brian Wilson picture?

possibly it isn't broken off but just the knob is missing....very hard tell in these grainy pix. If the knob is indeed missing possibly Brian just moved the one knob he had from one pot to another as the need arose.

There is a closeup of Brian playing that bass at the 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert in one of my Beach Boys books. I'll see if I find it and post the picture. :D

I think I saw a new RW '70s Tele Deluxe that was white, and it was not yellowed, just 'reliced'. But the Fiesta Red certainly has a little pink in it to look aged, so maybe a 'yellowish' Oly White is possible???

While I love the '50s P neck, it is way to big for some hands. I think a '60s profile would do well, whatever the color. But for those of us (at least) over 40, that Oly White sure has a special meaning :)
