The MIM Cowpoke is a cross between a JP90, a '51 reissue and a Precision Plus Deluxe. This bass was actually available with a rosewood fretboard, though I guess that only a small batch of maple-neck Cowpokes were produced. (this bass is not mine).

A maple-neck Cowpoke bass would certainly be a very rare bird.

Thanks for the pic. I had seen this bass mentioned a couple of times recently on TB, and was wondering what it looked like. Seems like it would be a nice addition to anyone's collection.

I never saw a "maple-neck" Cowpoke. Did this P-Bass ever came with a maple fingerboard or it was definitely a rosewood-neck model?

Technically these were the "Precision Bass Specials" of the day. There were both passive and active EQ versions.

I had one of these in see-through blonde. Most of the ones I saw had transparent finishes. Red, blue and blonde ones along with an especially gorgeous sunburst were what I recall seeing. The sunburst was an upcharge on them I think.

I really liked the active EQ version I had overall. Only gripes were that I didn't like the Jazz neck profile so much, the screwed on battery cover which took a while to get open and the stacked controls could be confusing. However it was pretty and it sounded great. Would make a really good recording bass. They were very similar to the Stu Hamm basses of that time which were also MIM then. I never have seen one with a maple board though. I think mine was a 94. The Cowpokes as they are now called were all MIM.

The guy I sold mine to 7 years ago is a keyboard player and he still has it. I've thought about buying it back. Just because the blonde is so pretty.

Here are some Cowpoke photos:

Those are beautiful basses. I like the P and J combination pups on a bass.

I agree. PJ basses are extremely versatile.

The most common features for this kind of basses are a passive 3-knob setup (volume, blend, tone), a 4-string format, a single-sided headstock and a 22-fret neck with maple or rosewood fingerboard and abalone dots.

Of course active electronics with a 2-band EQ and a 2+2 tuner config are quite good options, but they're better suited for a more "modern" sound.
