I have been looking and the Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass at several online music stores... why is it that the fender fretless p-bass is such a rare instrument? I would expect Fender to produce several Fender fretless p-bass models besides just this one...

I would assume most players that play fretless seem to like a smooth tone over the punchyness that a P-bass offers. Hell even a Musicman offers smoother tones with the preamp adjusted...

I have played a fretless and love it, but I would assume that there is not much of a market for them as they can be difficult to play.

That and maybe after Jaco took the frets out of his Jazz everyone thought that was the tone to have for fretless.

I've seen a few used fretless P's in local ads, hopefully the next time a good one pops up I'll have the cash to grab it.

And if you don't mind swapping necks you could just make your own out of parts. That's what I ended up doing with a Squier P body and '74 Jazz neck I have.

Like MSHARDIE said, not a lot of demand/interest in fretless basses and for those who want a fretless a fretless J bass seems to be the standard probably b/c of Jaco. The only way to get a fretless P is to defret your fretted p bass or from time to time on ebay you'll see used original Fender fretless maple and rosewood fingerboard necks mainly form late 60 to 70's p basses.

They have now actually begun making a FRETTED Tony Franklin P bass same body/pick ups but with a maple neck/fingerboard neck w/o the drop d. Wish they still used an ebony fingerboard and kept the drop d.

A friend used to have a MIJ fretless P... black guard on a black body with a maple fretless board. It was the sexiest bass I ever saw.
