Hello, New member to the board. I am a Fender fan and own a few. My question is I am looking to trade on a 1979 P bass walnut color w/maple board....awsome color! The shop owner and i were taking it apart when he and i were both surprised to find under the pickguard two CNC type holes in the body.
Both are the size of a nickel and one is located a half inch or so below the neck pocket. The other was under the bridge where the wire for grounding goes to make contact with the bridge. These were not added since the mocha or walnut color is applied over them.

I have seen CNC type holes in MIM bodys near the wiring cavity routes but this is a 1979? Did they do this then or was it for another reason? I doubt its a fake body, the bass was a player not a collecter's piece...could be wrong...help?

Hi Bassbully, welcome to the board.

I own a 1979 Precision bass and I remember seeing the same hole under the pickguard when I was working on my bass some time ago. The holes are original to the bass and I suspect that they were done as some sort of CNC registration holes.

The 70's were a long time ago, and CNC was in its infancy then, so they may or may not still use thes kinds of holes on P-basses.

I hope you enjoy your bass or get a good price for it if you trade or sell it.

Good luck with it

Thanks for reply and help. Since this post i have had some others get back to me on this issue. It was found in late 70's Fenders and used as NC not CNC from what others said since CNC was not yet in use.

I am picking up the P bass this week and did a trade with another 70's bass for it. It plays great and i am happy.thanks for the help.
