Is there any good reason why all bass guitars come with wire-wound strings as standard? I hate the blessed things! They are noisy in glissando, more susceptible to fret buzz, wear frets and fingertips rapidly and have lesser sustain. I always use nickel flatwounds on my Precision and nylon flatwounds (tru-bass) on my fretless Jazz Bass. I can fit strings myself and without finger-gashing cut ends protuding. So just sell me the instrument and let me choose round or flatwound at point of sale.

The reason is simple. Rounds are cheaper than flats, requiring less finishing and rounds also have a longer life. Basses have to have strings on them or you couldn't test them out to see if you liked it. I agree that they'd probably sell better with fresh flats on them. They'd play better for sure!

Most more advanced players have favored strings and are going to change strings first thing. Most dealers will set them up with whatever strings you want, so long as you pay for the strings. When buying a new instrument I get to their best price then agree to it if they throw in a free setup with my chosen strings.

New basses come with roundwounds because that's the sound the younger customers are going for.
