I have a Squier VM Jazz as a backup, but I would like to get the new VM Precision with the same natural finsh color scheme. I'll have to wait and see, though. I just got the Jazz, it might be too soon to get another. It is awfully tempting, though.

Looking for a Vintage Modified 70s P-Bass in the classic Natural finish over a solid Northern swamp ash body? Actually I never saw this bass in production.

Hope Fender will release a fretless version of the VM 70s Precision with an unlined maple fretboard.

They have one at WorldMusicSupply.com, but like the VM Jazz, the body is soft maple according to the info on the WMS website.

I have a Squier Vintage Modified P-Bass. Quarter Pounders and Sunbeams installed. I like it cause the bass is so light.

I take a first generation P-Bass copy as #1, not as a backup. I leave the high dollar stuff safe from harm at home.

Yah, I just put in an order for an SX P-bass, too, out of curiosity as much as anything else. If nothing else, it should be a good beater bass, and something I can practice surgery on without worry. (this will be my second bass I've bought in a month, after the Squier VMJ, with my MIA Jazz that makes three total. I'm running outta room already!)

Bathead too! The SX basses have amazing finishes really. There's also typical Asian hardware and electronics.

Another import bass I want to check out is the AXL in the crackled vintage white finish. The AXL's get decent reviews and are also available in a stock PJ set up. While the SX are obviously knockoffs of P's and J's, the AXL's are more of an original design with something more like a Strat body than either a P or J.

People who can do their own electronics upgrades (and also hardware upgrades or repairs if and when needed) can make an SX, AXL, Jay Turser, Douglas or similar Asian import bass into a passable yet minimal cost player.

Just know up front though that on most Asian basses I've fooled with some standardized parts that fit a real USA or MIM Fender, such as pickguards and tuners, won't fit without modifications to the instrument or even to the part itself much of the time. Sometimes the pickup cavities won't accept aftermarket pickups without some routing. Most of them use mini-pots and standard CTS pots won't fit without routing.

Also know up front that the resale value on used Asian imports is next to nothing, even after you drop in 200 dollars worth of upgrades. So make sure you really like the way it plays and that you are for sure going to keep it before you start throwing more dollars at it for upgrades. If you do find one you really like and you plan to keep indefinitely then it would make sense to upgrade the electronics (pickup, pots, cap, Switchcraft jack, wiring) and also copper shield/star ground the ones with single coil pickups. Any other upgrades on them are pretty much just for looks, unless of course a part breaks or becomes unstable like a slipping tuner.

I got a P bass clone, not really a backup, since it's my only bass. It doesn't have any markings on it all, so I don't really know anything about it. Cost me like $40 and plays good.
