In the early 1980s I traded a Rickenbacker bass for a Fender Precision. I was never able to find the serial number but a luthier recently took it apart. He said the neck was stamped for being made in 1966, but that the pots were not original nor could he authenticate the pickups because whoever had the bass before me had glued foam under them.

Anyway he said the only saving grace is that the neck is stamped, and that I still have what appears to be the original hardshell case (orange plush inside). Can anyone venture a guess as to other ways to authenicate the age or comment on simply attempting to sell the neck and case?

Thanks for all ideas!

Nick

Ok just had a look at those, would still need to see more pics to make a definitive judgement but in my opinion the bass COULD be genuine but with a few replacement parts. I would be tempted to keep it, but thats just me! Sorry can't be more help.........

Thanks, Lazzer --

I will try to find one of the "whole" guitar -- right now it's at a music shop.

Thanks, again.

I just finished reading a book on Fenders.

It's not unusual for there to be different dates on necks, pots, bodies (when they were date-stamped) as well as bridges (way beck when those were serial numbered in the '50's).

Beautiful bass, though and enjoy her.

It looks to me as if you have an original 1966 Fender Precision body and neck. The pickguard has been replaced because I can see it in the pictures that you posted and it is not a Fender Tortoise shell PG.
If the serial number plate is gone , that is unfortunate, but you could still restore this bass to its former glory.

IF the pickups have been replaced and you don't like the sound of the pickup that you have in the bass, I would recomend that you buy a Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-bass PU and buy two older style CTS pots and a paper-in-oil cap to really make the bass tone great.

If you just want to sellthe neck and case, I am sure that you will have many eager buyers waitng to strike.
I would suggest ebay to maximize your return.

Good luck with it.
