Hi everyone,

I live in Germany and play a Japan made Fender Aerodyne Precision Classic. Unfortunately the tuners are broken, and it seems like I can't get the right replacement tuners in all of Germany.

Problem's all the Fender or Fender-Style Tuners are made for 17,5 or 18mm holes in the headstock - but the Aerodyne has only got 14mm holes.

If someone knows where I can get new ones please let me know, right now I can't play the bass and it's just standing in the corner cause it's got no tuners and I haven't foung any that fit.

Greetings Dani

Hi Dani and welcome to the Fender Forum.

Ideally you should use the right replacement tuners. However, I too have checked all the non-Fender dealer parts sources I know of and I can not find suitable direct replacements either.

So here is what I would do.

1. Contact a Fender dealer and see if they can order them.

2. If the dealer can not help you then contact Fender Consumer Relations. The link to the contact information is here: http://www.fender.com/support/consumer_relations.php

3. If Fender Consumer Relations can not help you, you may have to scour eBay for used ones if you want a direct replacement.

4. If you can not wait to find a used set on eBay, you could do either of the following things. The "A" solution would be preferable from a looks standpoint but cost more. There is also some risk involved anytime you drill anything. The "B" solution probably is a better "do-it-all-yourself" and a more economical solution.

A. You can have the holes drilled larger and use the standard Fender 18mm (11/16th") tuners. The best way to do that is to get some 14mm (9/16th") dowels and tightly fill the holes with the dowels (which may require some glue) then drill in the exact center of the dowels to the proper diameter to mount standard Fender tuners. If you do not fit dowel plugs into the holes prior to drilling then the drill holes may wind up off center. I'd have this done by a professional luthier and would never attempt it myself as I do not have the proper tools nor the experience. This is something you will only get one chance to get right. Once the holes were the proper diameter, then I could install the new standard tuners myself.

B. Use the readily available aftermarket 14mm diameter BASS SIDE tuners like the Gotoh or the Grover 4-In-Line sealed type tuners commonly used on Asian basses. This would work, but isn't the best solution because your instrument will then have extra screw holes left over on the back of the headstock and may also see the outline where the original tuner back plates were seated. It isn't pretty but it would work. From the front of the instrument you'd know they were not standard tuners too. This is the most economical and fastest way to fix it but probably not the best way.
