You could take the one off your '78 P-bass and see.

I'd say that probably a Fender American pickguard will not fit a Squier without modification such as extra holes if they fit at all. They are made in different plants on different continents. For example, I know a MIM Fender Mike Dirnt pickguard looks like it should fit on a Fender CIJ 51 RI but it won't without some drilling and filing.

You might try asking in the Squier Bass forum. It is near the bottom of the list on the Fender Forums homepage so just scroll down past the Fender products to the Squier products.

Sometimes modern Fender aftermarket pickguards like the '62 RI P-Bass guards won't fit other models. Sometimes they do though! So hard to say.

To be sure of a perfect fit you can get a custom pickguard made from your existing pickguard or from a careful tracing, but they are usually expensive.
Sources for aftermarket custom and mass produced pickguards are listed on this page of my website: http://brotherdave.com/add_parts.htm

I once took a pick guard from a broken '96 Fender Precision bass and put it on a Squier P-bass affinity series. The screw holes and volume/tone knob holes for the most part lined up. Depending, do not be surprised if you have to drill new holes first. The biggest thing was I had to loosen the pickups to allow the pick guard to be pushed into place around them as well as around where the neck applies to the body. Both of those areas were very snug.

Just check the screw hole layout, I took my old pickguard off my 2004 MIM P Bass and put it on my 2000 Squier Affinty P Bass.
