I was wondering if anyone here took the pickup from a P-Bass and set it as a bridge pickup. I'm thinking about trying it and was wondering if anyone had any comments about it. Thanks!

Actually before the P/J was invented, Fender did precisely that. the 83/84 and 84/85 Fender Precision Elite II Precision active basses had a pair of split coil pickups, deluxe gold plated hardware. Bodies and necks were walnut. They look like this:

Sound was very rich, but you get a wider variety with a P/J setup which followed shortly after this dual P-pickup "innovation."

The P/J setup already existed many long years ago before Fender making their very own P/J basses.

Many P-Bass players such as Mo Foster had already fitted a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position. Unlike the official Fender P/J "Special" models, which use a side-mount jack, these basses still had the top-mount jack.

True. T-Bone Wolk also added a white covered DiMarzio Jazz pickup at the bridge on his '64 P-bass by the early 80's. His had one stacked control in the center which was similar to a 62 Jazz then two other separate single-function controls on either side. T-Bone's bass however had the jack relocated to the side.

Todd Krause of the Fender Custom Shop did make one relic treatment recreation of this instrument and it went to T-Bone in September of 2009. T-Bone died February, 2010. You can see photos of the original and the Custom Shop version on T-Bone's website, click Gallery, then go to Gallery 3, then to photo 10 here: http://tbonewolk.com/TBoneHome.html

I know that the P/J setup isn't quite what you were asking. You wanted to know about a P/P setup, and like it was mentioned, yes there was the Fender Elite in/around 1983 or so.

The biggest problem with the Elite was that it was made of cast iron and weighed maybe close to 17 lbs. Seventeen AMERICAN pounds, not some metric value!

I'm as sure as there are Wah pedals for basses that someone - somewhere has another P/P configuration out there, but AFAIK the Fender Elite was the only produced one - but only for a very short time and without much fanfare.

I don't know if you'd call it the most beautiful boat anchor designed to look like a bass guitar or a bass guitar disguised as a boat anchor.

The Elite II had 2 P-pup pairs. The Elite had 1 P-pup pair.
