Well, here's the Custom Shop replica of the 1949 Snakehead Esquire prototype. Esquires were single-pickup Telecasters. Strats had a double-cutaway body and three single-coil pickups.

Strats didn't appear until 1954.

In fact, the first Stratocaster prototypes were developed by Freddie Tavares circa 1952/53 and the final design officially debuted in 1954, though I'm not as 100% sure about that.

I checked a site , Strat-talk.com . It mentions the early prototypes being played a few yrs before the production models release . Even mentions Dan Randall who helped design the guitar having one plus a few other people ( not named) playing the guitar before production . there weren't many protos .

Do you have a couple of pictures from these prototypes? I guess the guys you're describing are Doc Kaufmann and Freddie Tavares.

No pics chrome , that's what everyones asking about in that site . It mainly talks about a show that interviewed people about the protos . My bad , Dan Randall helped found the Fender company , not the strat design .

It mentions the protos as "salesmans" that were a production run used to show the dealers the new guitar . After that these protos were sold off to whoever ????? Maybe that's how this guy got this proto . Just plain luck

If you've trouble to find the original capri orange fretless, the Custom Shop can build a faithful replica with all the custom options mentioned on the previous posts. You gotta have two beautiful Custop Shop 1978 Fretless Ps in 3-tone sunburst and capri orange, with the latter having a 4-ply tortoise pickguard instead of white and gold-plated hardware instead of chrome.

Freddie Tavares and Doc Kaufmann developed the Strat design.

You're right about Don Randall, he had helped Leo to establish the Fender companies with Forrest White, Dale Hyatt and George Fullerton.

I'll be very happy to see a couple of pics showing your two Custom Shop babies in action, as well as some good YouTube vids.

Glad meeting you, Joe.

Kindest cheers

John

They're two subforums in which you can discuss your plans with the CS staff: "Let's Talk Custom Shop" and "Ask Mike Eldred". You can post your threads here.

Even a Custom Shop 1978 PJ maple-neck fretless in Monaco Yellow with N3 Noiseless pickups and US Deluxe active electronics or a 1965 ebony neck fretless Jazz Bass in Sienna Sunburst with the same pickups and circuitry would be future additions in your arsenal. You'll benefit a lot from the advantages of two distinctive voices, active and passive. Really, those so-called lurid "International" colours suck!
